It was hard for Evelyn not to notice a man such as Royce and the same can be said for the reader. His commanding presence and verbal sparring leaves little doubt that this confident rake knows exactly what he wants and always gets it. Yet Royce never stood a chance where the charming southern lady is concerned. Evelyn surprises him at every turn with her quick wit, innocent beauty, and even her drinking habits, but perhaps most surprising was the way in which she infiltrated his heart. For Evelyn it was a mostly awkward first, second, and third meeting, but it was not lost on her the type of man Royce portrays himself and then there is the type of man she knows he can be. However, neither of them anticipated the feelings that emerged once an unlikely alliance is forged.
I very much enjoyed this sensual tale and the pairing of two people coming from very different backgrounds. It was unfortunate that the fast pacing made it a bit hard to really connect with the characters until the second half of the story, but Royce and Evelyn own the story with their personalities and penchant for mischief. It is an easy read without need for extreme heat or emotions and historical romance fans will appreciate a less restricting storyline bound by rules of the era's society. A delightful and amusing story!
Spoiled New York rogue Royce Mc Arthur lives a charmed life. He sees no reason to settle down, until his mother issues her decree that he must grow up, find a wife and produce some grandchildren, preferably before she dies of old age. But his choices are quite limited considering the only women of his acquaintance are ones of ill repute.
Meeting the beautiful Evelyn DeJarlias at a ball gives him hope he may have found the one. Her southern blue collar outspokenness and lack of refinement draws him like a moth to a flame. Unfortunately, she does not find him nearly as endearing -- consistently refusing his lavish gifts and his attentions, she poses a challenge he simply cannot ignore.
When his mother and her widowed father begin to keep company together secretly, it provides the perfect excuse for him to spend time with Miss DeJarlias. But figures from Royces past threaten to destroy the blossoming love between the couple. Evelyn must decide if she is willing to trust the man or hold his past indiscretions against him.
