Texas Two Step

Texas Montgomery Mavericks, Book 1

Olivia Montgomery is sure she can spend one weekend at a wedding with her ex, Mitch Landry. It’s been several years since they broke up and surely they can spend a few hours together. Olivia is the maid of honor and Mitch is the best man. Yes, they will have to spend time together but she can do it.

Mitch knows he messed up when he let Olivia go. He thought he was doing the right thing but it was wrong. Marrying his brother’s finance after he died because she was pregnant was definitely not a smart move. They had nothing to hold them together when she lost the baby. Now, Mitch is going to see if Olivia will take him back.

Olivia has no plans on getting back with Mitch. Oh, she may sleep with him but she doesn’t want him to get too close. She has a secret, one she should have told Mitch about years before but the time never seemed right. When Mitch called to tell her that he was marrying someone else, Olivia had just found out she was pregnant with Mitch’s baby. She knows that he’ll want to be part of his son’s life if he learns about him. Can she keep this secret a little bit longer?

This is the first book in a new series, Texas Montgomery Mavericks by Cynthia D’Alba. Olivia’s brothers make appearances in this first book and you get a good feel for the family dynamics. In a unique twist, this series starts off with the only girl in the family with the boys to follow even though they are older.

The characters of Mitch and Olivia were well done. They have families, friends and exes that they have to interact with, deal with and live with. Things don’t always go smooth, especially as Mitch’s ex doesn’t want to be his ex. Olivia has some self-confidence issues which causes her problems. Mitch has a tendency to only see what he wants, even if that’s not reality. All in all, the characters are realistic and authentic. In fact, they feel as if you could know them.

The setting was also good. Part of the story was set in Dallas and the rest on a large cattle ranch. Each was described well and became real.

The plot was more complex than it appears. Some of this is due to Mitch’s ex who is doing things behind Mitch’s back in his name. Some is due to Mitch’s parents knowing about his son but not telling him. There is lots going on but it all fits together perfectly.

I liked this story for the most part. It felt possible and became real. The ending was probably the only place that I had some disbelief but it wasn’t a horrible ending, just one that I didn’t really think was realistic. Overall, I related to this story and didn’t want to put it down. I enjoyed reading about Mitch’s family and their ranch. I enjoyed reading about the gym Olivia owns and her plans. I really liked Mitch’s unusual housekeeper.

This was a good western romance and a good introduction to a new series. I hope to see more of Olivia and Mitch in future books. I also wouldn’t mind seeing more of Olivia’s brothers and her ex!

Book Blurb for Texas Two Step

Their love never died, but her secrets could break his trust beyond repair.

After six years and too much self-recrimination, rancher Mitch Landry is ready to admit he was wrong. He’d loved Olivia Montgomery but commitment wasn’t high on his list back then. That was his first mistake. He’s just divorced his second, and he’s set to do whatever it takes to convince Olivia to give him another try.

Through hard work, determination and more than a few tears, Olivia survived the break-up with Mitch. She’s rebuilt her life around her business and the son she loves more than life itself. She’s not proud of the mistakes she’s made—particularly the secrets she’s kept—but when life hands you manure, you use it to make something better of yourself…lest you get stuck in it.

At a hot, muggy Dallas wedding, they reconnect. Olivia’s first instinct is to play it cool, but after one devastating kiss things flare real out of control, real fast. Maybe a quick roll in the hay will get him out of her system once and for all. Funny thing about hay though, once it’s tangled in your hair, getting it out risks revealing things that were never meant to see the light of day.

Warning: Contains hot sex, a vindictive ex-wife, and hot chocolate chip cookies.
