Alaric McCabe knows his duty to his family and this time it's to marry the daughter of their neighboring clansman for a much needed alliance. It was decided that Alaric would travel over to the McDonald holding where he would formally ask for Rionna McDonald in marriage.
Rionna wasn't like any other woman Alaric knew. She was pretty enough but she enjoyed doing things men do like fight. Still, Alaric was sure he could make this match work and by marrying Rionna, eventually Alaric would become laird of the McDonald clan.
During the trip to the McDonald's holding, Alaric would need to camp out over night. There should have been no problems but Alaric and his escort are attacked and everyone is killed but Alaric. He finds his way to a healer's house.
Keeley Fraser use to be best friend's with Rionna until she was thrown out of the McDonald clan. Now, she lives in a small cottage outside the village. She works as a healer and has to buy anything she needs in a different village. When a seriously wounded man shows up in her yard, Keeley isn't sure what to do with him or how to get him into her house!
Alaric is sure he's being treated by an angel; then again, at other times he's sure it's the devil. Regardless of his opinion, when his brother, Ewan arrives Keeley is given no choice but to return to McCabe lands with them. Ewan's wife is expecting their first child and their clan's healer has recently died. Keeley is needed.
Things really get complicated on the McCabe land. Another attempt is made on Alaric's life. Ewan is driving his wife nuts. And Alaric is falling in love with Keeley but is honor bound to marry Rionna. Keeley isn't sure where she belongs. She was born a McDonald but they don't want her. Can she make a life for herself on McCabe land?
This is the second book in Maya Bank's trilogy about the McCabe brothers. You really don't have to read the first book to thoroughly enjoy this one but I would. It's wonderful plus; you get the background on why Alaric has to marry Rionna and why someone might be trying to kill him.
This story had all the bases covered for an interesting historical highlands romance. There are sexy Scotsmen. There is fighting. There is even some court intrigue. At no point is there anything boring or insipid.
The characters are wonderful. Keeley is warm and headstrong. She's good at what she does but still feels slighted and angry at her own clan for throwing her out when she had done nothing wrong. Alaric has honor and the desire to do the right thing for his clan. Ewan is a strong leader but he's a bit over protective towards his wife. Mairin, Ewan's wife, seems to delight in driving Ewan crazy as she ignores most of what he orders. All in all, it's quite a group of interesting characters.
Alaric is trying very hard to not seduce Keeley but what happens when Keeley starts working on seducing Alaric? She knows that he's to marry Rionna but Keeley wants to know what love feels like. So, get ready for some intense and emotional love scenes that has some graphic sex.
I really loved this book. I started it as quickly as I could and then had no desire to put it down until I finished the last page. I got so involved with this story that it became real and I couldn't wait to see who was trying to kill whom. Even more important was how could Alaric get out of marrying Rionna or if he even could.
This is a definite must read for any fan of historical romances or Scottish romances or any kind of romance. Ms Banks is a master story teller and she'll have no problem getting and keeping your interest.
