Another wonderful addition to the steampunk series that Cindy Spencer Pape has shared with us. (This book is a stand alone but the entire series is a must read!) Mystery, magic and a strange plague are all elements in this novella. Romance blossoms between Minnie and Seb, even though they normally wouldn’t have ever met. Class differences aside, the characters are charming and well thought out. The introduction of the supernatural come across naturally and flowed with the story. Though characters from previous stories make appearances, they are incorporated in such a way that their purpose is clear as is the reason they are there. I absolutely loved this story and couldn’t put it down. The only bad thing I can say about it is that it truly isn’t long enough. I ran out of book way before I ran out of interest. Now, I can’t wait until the next addition to this series!
Minnie Shaw needs to find a doctor for her sick daughter, Ivy. The problem is, she has no money. In her search, she knocks on the wrong door, the door of Police Inspector Seb Brown. Seb immediately jumps into action helping Minnie talk to his next door neighbor, the doctor she was looking for and goes with her to collect her daughter. Upon arriving at Minnie’s apartment though they discover a scene that was totally unexpected, a murder. The friend watching Ivy has been killed while Ivy was hiding. When Ivy comes out, her fever is broke but she’s covered in what appears to be soot. How did that happen? What is going on?
Police inspector Sebastian Brown served Queen and country in India before returning to England to investigate supernatural crimes alongside the Order of the Round Table. If his wifeless, childless life feels a little empty sometimes, that's not too great a price to pay in the name of duty.
Minerva Shaw is desperately seeking a doctor when she mistakenly lands on Sebastian's doorstep. Her daughter Ivy has fallen gravely ill with a mysterious illness—the same illness, it seems, that's responsible for taking the lives of many of Ivy's classmates.
Seb sniffs a case, and taking in Minnie and Ivy seems the only way to protect them while he solves it. But as mother and daughter work their way into his heart and Seb uses every magickal and technological resource he can muster to uncover the source of the deadly plague, it's he who will need protecting—from emotions he'd thought buried long ago.
