A nasty bite starts a whirlwind of doom?one soul turns toward the darkness while one heart battles to deny destiny.
Nexi Jones can never catch a break. With only just returning from a much needed vacation—a deadly Werewolf attack takes place in Plymouth, Minnesota. In pursuit for answers, Nexi finds herself face-to-face with someone she desperately wanted to avoid, Magnus, the Lord of the Underworld. He hasn’t forgotten her and will stop at nothing to use her magical abilities for his personal gain.
Soon, Nexi will be in a battle far worse than conjuring Magic against those of the Underworld. The fiercest battle rages within her as her soul combats against her heart to decide Nexi’s fate. Will all that matters—will everyone she loves—be lost forever?
The warm water wrapped around me in a total sense of relaxation as I leaned back into my antique claw-foot bathtub.
“I will eternally feel overjoyed that I have been granted the right to share in your life.”
Three books into the series and I still love the story. Hands down, this book is my favorite so far in the series. Nexi has grown into a woman that understands and has accepted the responsibilities placed on her. Deeper connections have formed and hearts scarred, however Nexi has become a woman all the stronger for it. Speaking of heart ache, while it is no novelty to her, Nexi goes to great lengths to insure those around her do not suffer the same hurt she has. The depth of caring she has for others is touching which brought me closer to her, making me care all the more for her outcome.
I love when a story shows a strength between the heroine and hero that is based on more than the mere sex. While the hot love is almost tangible between Nexi and Kyden, the depth of affection they share for one another burns bright throughout the book. It's all about the romance, right.
A surprise plot twist, riddled with high emotions and suspense, left me flipping pages at a finger breaking speed. Ms. Kennedy has written another great addition to the Magical Sword series that has carried Nexi into unchartered territories. Each new addition to the series ups the ante, forces the heroine to step outside her comfort zone, pushes her boundaries, and teaches her to trust those around her. Nexi's journey has become, for me, more interesting with each book.
As for the overall plot, Ms. Kennedy has done a great job carrying over the story arc to each new book. While resolving one issue for the heroine, Ms. Kennedy continues to provide exciting plot twits and questions to unravel. She concludes each book with a satisfactory ending for the characters, but leaves space for the story to continue on in the next book.
The Devil's Kiss Takes place in several locations. From Nexi's home in the Otherworld to the Patriarch of the werewolves property in Utah. Then the story moves to the Underworld where devilishly handsome Magnus applies his wicked charm on Nexi, leading her to possibly find a different destiny than what she sees for herself. I have to admit, I almost crossed over myself. But that is all I will say. I won't ruin the surprise for you!
Ms. Kennedy has a very unique way of telling her stories. She cuts to the action, delivering all the juicy banter between the characters and keeps the story moving. While I love her fresh new way of approaching paranormal romance, this fast paced writing style did leave me wanting a little more on a couple of occasions. At times I felt there could have been a deeper point of view into Nexi's feelings and mind set. That said, the author did use the heroine's actions to show how she felt towards what was going on around her.
In The Devil's Kiss we get to see more of Nexi's growth than in the two previous books. Not only does she discover and hone phenomenal witch powers, she also discovers more about herself. She is faced with so many hurdles to over come, both emotionally and physically, that by the end of the book I was drained. It would take a person built of inner strength and will to stand up and face the obstacles thrown at Nexi. As I read, I wondered how she'd react to each situation that she was placed in. I wondered how her moral code would show her inner character. As I progressed, page after page, I was not let down. I'm not sure I would have been able to make the final choice that she had to make though. Magnus was just to good - bad yes - but definitely good too. I am fighting to hold back all the exciting details Magnus brings to the plot. I will say this, the dark lord of the Underworld had a charm about him that almost captured my heart...almost.
Since it's safer to talk about Kyden, let's switch to Nexi's love interest. Although the story is not in his point of view, we get a clear picture of his character by his protective nature for his love, his rage at not being able to care for her with every step she takes, and most importantly the battle he wages to claim her as his heart and soul. This books is filled with just that - heart and soul. From Nexi to Kyden and yes, Magnus, the emotions run high for sure.
Stacey Kennedy has rewritten the rules to telling a darn good story. She's grabbed my attention and I want more. I've said it in all my reviews for this series, The Magical Sword series is a must read. Her unique voice is fresh and addictive in many ways. Once you start you have to finish. I am diving into the fourth book, First and Last, ready to see where Nexi's story will take me next.
