Jane Ann Krentz draws readers under her spell with this fascinating mystery. The surreal, grittiness pulled me in from the beginning and I immediately felt invested in what happened to Winter Meadows. Then when Jack Lancaster was introduced in such a powerful fashion I couldn’t wait to see how these two lives were going to intertwine.
The older Winter was such a change from the young girl I initially met that her poise threw me off a little but her connection with Jack was so powerful I couldn’t help but find out what was going to happen next. Before I knew it I was rushed along on a whirlwind adventure. An adventure I definitely wasn’t expecting but couldn’t have enjoyed more. I admired Jack’s special skills and his determination and I loved that Winter wasn’t going to let him fight his battles alone. Getting glimpses into how the antagonist became the person he was helped to explain his actions and the chain of events. Overall, this was an amazingly smart story with solid characters and a successful storyline. I suggest you pick it up and judge for yourself.

Quinton Zane is back.
Jack Lancaster, consultant to the FBI, has always been drawn to the coldest of cold cases, the kind that law enforcement either considers unsolvable or else has chalked up to accidents or suicides. As a survivor of a fire, he finds himself uniquely compelled by arson cases. His almost preternatural ability to get inside the killer's head has garnered him a reputation in some circles--and complicated his personal life. The more cases Jack solves, the closer he slips into the darkness. His only solace is Winter Meadows, a meditation therapist. After particularly grisly cases, Winter can lead Jack back to peace.
But as long as Quinton Zane is alive, Jack will not be at peace for long. Having solidified his position as the power behind the throne of his biological family's hedge fund, Zane sets out to get rid of Anson Salinas's foster sons, starting with Jack.
