The Duke's Quandary

Marriage Mart Mayhem, #2

Callie Hutton pens a remarkable Regency romance.

Miss Penelope Clayton is someone I could easily relate to. Her clumsy moments are something I can completely commiserate with. She is so passionate and her joy for her scientific studies and nature are contagious. Her exuberance is a pleasure to witness and I loved the fact that she truly does not want to participate in the social season. I loved that she found shopping to be tedious and that her dance lessons were a joy, at least for the reader. Her intelligence and determination are beyond admirable.

Drake, Duke of Manchester, is endearing from the very beginning. His inappropriate reaction to his house guest and his frustrations over his sisters could have made him appear to be a complete jackass but instead only proved how human he was. His reactions to his the strange American were delightful as the more determined he was to do his duty the more fascinated he became with Penelope. The acceptance Penelope received from Drake’s sisters and mother was beautiful and her overwhelming feelings about it delightful.

The settings are described in lovely detail without detracting from the story and the myriad of characters were beyond entertaining. I cannot wait to see Drake’s sisters have their very own adventures. This is a captivating story that I am sure I will find myself rereading again and again and I know I will enjoy it just as much every time.

The Story:

Miss Penelope Clayton has been forced to participate in the season, but she is determined to avoid finding a husband as she is quite happy with her life of scientific endeavours. Drake, Duke of Manchester, is determined to find a perfect bride this season. He wants a woman truly worthy of the title Duchess. Instead of focusing on his own search he becomes wrapped up with his sisters and their houseguest. Penelope is the least likely candidate, but tell that to his heart.

Book Blurb for The Duke's Quandary

London 1814... Drake, Duke of Manchester is searching the Marriage Mart for a perfect bride. He wants a woman who is poised, sophisticated, and worthy of the title Duchess. But most of all, he wants a woman who does not want the useless emotion of love. Socially awkward Miss Penelope Clayton isn't meant for marriage. A serious botanist, she has no desire to wed, so being forced by her guardian to participate in the Season to find a husband is torture. She'll never fit in with the ton, especially if they discover she's been pretending to be a man within the scientific community. As Drake's family makes over Penelope, turning her from naive bluestocking to enchanting debutante, he is put upon to introduce her to society and eligible bachelors. Despite dance lessons and new gowns, Penelope is the opposite of poised and sophisticated as she stumbles from one mishap to the next. Why then, does he find it so hard to resist her?
