Ellie's Song

Ellie Kellson walked away from up and coming country singer Lane Walker. She never told him she was pregnant or that they had a little girl. Now four years later, Ellie's living in the small town where she grew up when Lane Walker ends up on her doorstep. Will Ellie listen to what Lane has to say and give their love a second chance or will time and the distractions between them get in the way?

Ellie's Song by Ginger Hanson is a sweet, charming second chance romance between two young lovers who let their insecurities get in the way. The characters are likeable and the dialogue is lively. This is Ms. Hanson's second story to be set in the small town of Tassanoxie, Alabama.

Ellie Kellson is a small town southern girl, raising her daughter Ashlee and trying to make a name for herself as a textile craft professional. While Ellie's life is pretty routine now, it wasn't always that way. Four years ago she was attending college and lived with up and coming country singer Lane Walker. Ellie and Lane had fallen in love before his fame and popularity got in the way and before Ellie became insecure about the hundreds of female fans constantly throwing themselves at Lane. She couldn't handle the pressure his new found fame put on their lives. Walking away, even when she discovered she was pregnant, was the only thing she felt she could do. She never told him he was going to be a father or that they had a little girl.

Lane Walker is a young, talented, country singer with a problem. In love with Ellie since the day he met her, he's never gotten over their affair. He's never understood why she left him and still wants her back in his life. But like Ellie, Lane has his own issues he's never dealt with and it's those issues that helped drive Ellie away when he told her he never wanted children. When a media rumor finally forces Lane to find Ellie and he discovers he's a father, Lane will have to make decisions about some changes in his life and learn how to make it clear once and for all Ellie's the only woman he'll ever want in his life.

The scenes between Ellie and Lane are full of angst, unspoken passion and great chemistry. They're deeply in love with each other but have allowed the media, Lane's ex-agent, fans and their pride to get in the way. While their physical attraction is easy, being honest and sharing their secrets and insecurities is what's hard and something they've never learned to do. Ms. Hanson did a good job with giving us insight into what the characters were feeling through their inner dialogue. While it's easy at first to want to blame first one or the other, Ellie and Lane's problems highlight that open and honest communication, while difficult, is imperative if a relationship is going to work. They're both to blame.

The secondary characters in the story are mostly Ellie's family, her mother Mary, her younger sister Freddie, her aunt and her best friend Joshua, who at times is almost a villain because of his own love and desire for Ellie. Something she doesn't return. Ashlee, Lane and Ellie's daughter, is a precocious three year old, who added an additional layer of depth. The townspeople of Tassanoxie also play a part in the story and like in any small town, secrets are hard to keep. They are also the first to help when a situation in the story requires their assistance.

The end of the story is somewhat adventurous when Ashlee goes missing, will Ellie and Lane be able to find their daughter and work through their differences or will their fear and pride drive them apart once and for all? You'll have to read Ellie's Song to find out. I really enjoyed this story and look forward to reading more of Ms. Hanson's work.
