I will admit to liking the overall novel of The Untamed Earl and yet I do not consider it to be along the bounds of a strong historical-romance.
Valerie Bowman, the author of the book had me hooked the moment I read her previous release of The Irresistible Rogue, and yet sadly I have yet to come across such a powerful, romantic read from the writer since that time. As for this story it started off extremely slow with the introduction to Alexandra, the heroine along with a wide range of secondary characters that I had zero interest in learning about. As we skip forward from the prologue into the first chapter we are then introduced to Owen, the hero. Owen, in my opinion is not the ideal hero for a historical-romance as he has child-like antics and certainly needs to grow into his manhood.
I will applaud the author for adding in lengths of humor into the novel, but it did not work well for Owen's character. I felt like he was a boy trapped inside a man's body. His father had more than had enough of his gambling ways and chasing down unproved women of society. Personally I agreed with Owen's father. As the story progresses so does Owen characters and by the end of the story I liked the man that he was, I wasn't thrilled about the final character but it he was improved.
As for Alexandra I am still trying to decide on whether or not I like her. She is by no means childish in the manner that Owen is, but she is very lost. She lives in the shadow of her older sister and I think Alexandra's character was written with too much desperation to find a suitable husband.
The romance was a little quirky although the attraction between Alexandra and Owen contained a passionate spark. Bowman, did do a good job at penning the romance and allowing it to take the spotlight within her novel. The romance is the sole purpose as to why I continue to read books written by this author. Still, I think her plots need to be more compelling if I am going to hold any further interest in my reading.
AN INDECENT PROPOSAL
Lady Alexandra Hobbs, the daughter of the Duke of Huntley, has intended to marry Lord Owen Monroe since she first glimpsed him from the window of her bedchamber, back when she was just a girl. But the duke has already chosen Alex’s infamously spoiled elder sister, Lavinia, for Owen. And now there’s no turning back.
Owen has spent most of his bachelor years drinking, gambling, and skirt-chasing. He won’t see another pound from his parents, however, until he’s engaged to Lavinia. Desperate, he accepts an offer from her innocent and spirited?and absolutely beautiful?sister Alex: She will
turn him into a perfectly tamed suitor, and show him how to woo the shrew. But when Alex’s true motives come to light, will their bargain lead to recriminations?or to a romance that defies everyone’s expectations?
Award-winning author Valerie Bowman once again delivers the romance and wit in The Untamed Earl!
