Darkest Flame: Part 4 of 4

A Dark Kings Novel

As I came to the final installment in the Darkest Flame serial I felt a little let down that the turnout wasn't quite what I expected it to be. It wasn't the ending nor was it the characters. Mostly it was the plot that seemed to continue endlessly throughout the novellas.

The plot didn't improve nor did it lessen as I approached the ending of part four. The suspense was average. The romance was strong and sensual, which I really savored throughout the entire the series. But the plot felt like I was enduring a roller coaster. The plot took a more syfy turn rather than the more paranormal atmosphere that I would have really liked to have seen. Perhaps if Grant would have chosen to stay with the paranormal tone I would have enjoyed part four more.

What I did find to be most pleasing with this series is how Kellan and Deane grew not only in their relationship with one another but within themselves as well. With the first part I didn't think I would ever fully understand Kellan and his nature, but by the end of the serial I fully understood the man beneath the dragon. Deane was a strong heroine from the first time I was introduced to her. As the serial continued she started to learn to trust Kellan and discovered that it was perfectly fine to depend on the person that she loved without fault.

Overall there was an equal amount of traits that I loved about this series and parts that I did not like. The biggest flaw is the concept of the serial installments rather than in a complete novel. This structure made it difficult for me to maintain a relationship with the author and the characters of the novel. It was more of a stop, go, stop, go feeling. This format also made the installments feel like pages were rushed from time to time.

Darkest Flames isn't a serial that should be ignored. In fact I encourage readers to read sections 1-4 in one go. Do keep in mind that this has more Syfy tones to it than PNR. I tend to stray more towards the paranormal tones. Still, I will continue to read Grant's titles as she remains an author that cannot be overlooked.
