Cross Keys

Elvenrude, #1

Wow! Author Ally Shields has created an entirely new world in her Cross Keys series. This first novel introduces us to several intense characters, not the least of whom are the leads, Kameo Ryndel, and Seth Lormarc. The characters, and all those who support these two, are wild and crazy, and ultimately a blast. The story itself is woven in such a way as to create a world for the reader, and take them on a wild ride. There’s more than enough intrigue and danger, with just the right amount of romance sprinkled in. This is a novel I seriously read in one sitting, it was that good. I am eagerly anticipating the next books in the series, as they are fantastic! This is a novel that would be terrific as a beach read, or even on a cold night curled up and cozy.

Kameo Ryndel has a bit of a problem. There’s a wanderer loose in New Orleans, and her king has ordered her to secure him. But before she can, gunmen arrive on scene and take the wanderers body to who knows where, and Kam has no real way of tracking them down. Then another wanderer appears. Who are they, and what are they doing outside of the elven kingdom they came from? After the second one disappears and Kam ends up with her rival Seth Lormarc from the “other” Elite clan, both suspect each other. As they each track down their own leads, the danger mounts, as does their attraction. When events rapidly spiral out of control, Kam and Seth must resort to each other to stop their own world from collapsing in chaos.

Conspiracy, murder, and magic…and the death of all they hold dear.

When the first wanderer—a common elf who isn’t authorized to use the portal—is spotted on the streets of New Orleans, the king assigns Kameo Ryndel to assist in the elf’s capture. But before she can intervene, humans with guns shoot the wanderer and steal his body. When Seth Lormarc, an Elite elf from a rival guild, appears at the scene, Kam suspects he is involved.

Seth Lormarc is in New Orleans to find out who was behind the portal breach, and his best lead is the intriguing Kam Ryndel. When he stakes out her apartment and finds her sneaking out in the middle of the night, dressed in black and leaping to the top of the nearest building, he knows there’s something unique about the beautiful elf. That kind of feat requires magic. Ancient magic.

As their paths cross during their investigations, they develop an irresistible attraction, although there’s little time for romance. The portal breach is tied to an illegal smuggling operation that has come to the attention of the human CIA. But the stakes are raised when Kam and Seth discover a band of conspirators and a rebellion deep in Elvenrude that promises nothing except destruction of their world.
