My Lord Scandal

Notorious Bachelors Series

My Lord Scandal by Emma Wildes is a wonderful recap of the Romeo and Juliet tale in a traditional regency setting.  Lady Amelia Patton has grown up tucked away in the country where she will not remind her aristocratic father of the loss of his wife in childbirth and the breathing difficulty that  their daughter has inherited.  The sheltered beauty is finally presented to Society under the chaperonage of her beloved aunt Sophia, herself an Original with a penchant for eccentric outfits.  A disturbing encounter with a handsome mysterious would-be thief on Amelia’s very own balcony entangles her in a longstanding feud that she has been completely ignorant of.  The alleged robber is none other than Alexander Hathaway, youngest scion of the family that bears a bitter emnity towards the Pattons due to an ancient lover’s scandal that destroyed the lives of those involved.  Alexander is reluctantly on a quest to retrieve an object that his grandmother insists that she must have removed from the Patton family’s possession but instead he discovers a mutual attraction for the educated and beautiful debutante.  Both families are adamantly opposed to the match but a mysterious correspondent seems to be trying to  facilitate the relationship.  Can love truly conquer all?

My Lord Scandal is a thoroughly entertaining introduction to the Notorious Bachelors series that features a close-knit group of gentlemen whose friendships were honed in the crucible of war.  Wildes does an excellent job of creating characters with depth without resorting to caricatures and her secondary storylines are intriguing without becoming overwhelming.  The adept melding of the sensual love scenes with the escalation of tension between the families as the mystery is gradually solved made this an irresistible read.  I can’t wait to read the next in the series and certainly will look for other works by this author.
