The Snow Queen

A Nutcracker Novella

Five years ago, something tragic happened. After the performance of The Nutcracker, the ballerina who played the Sugar Plum Fairy disappeared. The only thing left behind was her ballet slippers. Every year since her disappearance, another member has gone missing right after the last performance. Now eighteen-year-old Nieves Alba, who was in the original performance five years ago, is playing the Snow Queen. Everyone fears that she will be the next one to disappear. Boston police have surrounded the theater in hopes of deterring anymore disappearances from happening. Are they able to spare Nieves from being kidnapped? Do they finally find out who the kidnapper is?

To start off, I’d like to mention that this storyline really grabbed my attention at first. I thought the blurb sounded interesting and I eagerly wanted to read it to see what the mystery was behind all the ballet dancers’ disappearances. Unfortunately, once I started reading the story, I found myself not getting as invested in the characters as I had originally hoped. The story was a short one, which obvious doesn’t allow much room for in-depth character development or for relationships between the characters to get too involved. Not to mention, I didn’t like the characters at all. I found them to be more of a nuisance than anything else. Also, I’m not even sure what to say about the ending except that it was too rushed and to me, didn’t tie up all the loose ends as the ending should have.

I’m not sure if the author has intentions to make this an ongoing series or not, but sadly, after reading this one, I’m not interested in seeing if there will be more books in a series or not. I was thoroughly disappointed overall with this story.

Eighteen-year-old Nieves Alba, who played Clara in the first ill-fated performance, is now cast as the Snow Queen.
