When fourteen-year-old Victoria Secord hears about a fellow dog sledder selling some dogs, she decides to set out with her mushing dogs to see what he has to offer. Although living in Alaska has helped her know how to handle certain things, when she can’t find this guy’s house and then she stumbles upon Chris, a boy who has been injured on his snowmobile, neither are prepared for the tough journey they must travel together in order for them both to survive. Do Victoria and Chris finally make it home safely?
Right from the start I was pulled into this children’s story and as an adult, I found myself riveted to my seat. The story moved along nicely and was packed with plenty of suspenseful moments to keep me eagerly glued to the pages. I loved getting to know not only Victoria and Chris, but also Victoria’s sledding dogs. I love reading stories with an Alaskan theme and I’m so glad I stumbled upon this one on NetGalley. If you’re in the mood for a great children’s story with plenty of suspense and heart stopping moments, than don’t pass this one up! The publisher has labeled this book for Ages 10 and up and Grades 4 and up.
Victoria Secord, a fourteen-year-old Alaskan dogsled racer, loses her way on a routine outing with her dogs. With food gone and temperatures dropping, her survival and that of her dogs and the mysterious boy she meets in the woods is entirely up to her.
The author Terry Lynn Johnson is a musher herself, and her crackling writing puts readers at the reins as Victoria and Chris experience setbacks, mistakes, and small triumphs in their wilderness adventure.
