Lucy Varna continues her Daughters of the People series with this book Tempered. Tempered is the fourth book in the series, but listed as 3.5. While these books are listed as stand alone books I would highly recommend reading these books one after another and continuing them as they flow to each other and almost seem to be one book. The story line is well thought out and described and the characters are likable and draw the reader in. The book is a page turner and it is a pleasure to learn more of Hawthorne and see her character build. The pages sizzled with the love scenes between Hawthorne and Alex. Surprises and hints of the future are given in this book and I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
Hawthorne the Chronicler is an old and well-known and feared Daughter. In the mortal world she is a fantasy writer and it unexpectedly puts the world of the People into the lime light through a mortal man, Alex Kesselman who finds some of her old work and expands on it. Hawthorne must decide whether or not Alex is worth the risk to her heart and family by starting a relationship with him. As the Eternal Order begins moving against the Daughter's vulnerabilities are shown and must be protected.
Among the People, Hawthorne the Chronicler is well-known for two things: Her faithful rendition of their history and her inclination to behead those who betray her. To mortals, Hawthorne is better known as Al C. Hawthorne, a fantasy writer with a stellar imagination and a knack for complex stories. It is in this guise that she must track down the sources of comic book illustrator Aaron Kesselman's modernized tales of Rebecca the Blade.
Hawthorne's blunt words and lithe grace intrigue Aaron, enough for him to take her up on the offer of sharing her bed. Before he knows it, his heart begins the fall into love, a fall he's willing to take if only he can persuade Hawthorne that she isn't a two thousand year old immortal descended from one of the most ruthless warriors in British history.
The past isn't the only obstacle standing in the way of true love. The Eternal Order is on the move, targeting key members of the People in their never-ending quest to extinguish the Light. Hawthorne soon learns that a strong arm and a sharp blade aren't always the best weapons in a Daughter's arsenal, especially when her heart is involved.
Daughters of the People: Immortal Amazons unjustly cursed, struggling to save their People, and their hearts.
Author's Note: Tempered is Book 3.5 in the Daughters of the People Series.
