Seren of York is a peasant with dreams of becoming a journeywoman, becoming her own person. Seren's mother has passed on to her the ability to weave beautiful cloth on a special loom. Her world changes as she leaves the guild, where she was rejected. Seren is waylaid and told an unbelievable story that she runs from. As she attempts to escape, she ends up with a dark knight.
The dark knight is Kerrigan, the King of Camelot. Only Camelot is not the same as fable would have it. Camelot has been taken over by evil forces, led by Morgen le Fey and Kerrigan. When Kerrigan was a youth he found a sword buried in stone while being pursued. He grabbed the sword and was able to pull the sword out of the stone. Only the sword was not Excalibur and he was not Arthur. The sword he pulled was Caliburn, an evil sword of the fey, made to balance Excalibur. The one who carries the sword cannot be harmed or killed.
Kerrigan is inexplicitly drawn to Seren, who is compassionate and kind, something he is not used to. Seren realizes that Kerrigan is not as evil as he would like others to believe. As Morgen plots against both Seren and Kerrigan, Seren learns the truth of her past and Kerrigan finds himself in conflict. Difficult decisions must be made by both of them as their destinies are fulfilled.
Sword of Darkness is the first book in the Lords of Avalon series by Kinley MacGregor, who also writes as Sherrilyn Kenyon. I really enjoyed this book. The book was well written, with detailed descriptions of the individuals in the writer's new world. I especially enjoyed the gargoyles and dragons. The characters were a pleasure to meet and the secondary characters have me salivating for the rest of the Lords of Avalon series. This book is definitely joining my "keep pile" as I continue to enjoy the writing style of this fabulous writer.
The new king of Camelot wears no shining armor: Arthur and his knights have fallen and a new king rules. In the darkest forest... A scared, forsaken youth has become the most powerful -- and feared -- man in the world. Ruthless and unrestrained, Kerrigan has long ceased to be human. In the heart of London... A spirited peasant mired in drudgery, Seren dreams of becoming her own woman, but never expects that by fleeing her fate, she will meet her destiny. Their worlds are forever changed... Kerrigan's goal is simple: barter or kill Seren to claim Arthur's Round Table. Yet she is the one person who holds no fear of him. More than that, her nobility sparks something foreign inside him. In his nether realm, kindness is weakness and a king who harbors any sort of compassion loses his throne. For countless centuries, Kerrigan has lived alone in the shadows. Now Seren's courage has forced him into the light that will bring either salvation to both of them...or death.
