The Warrior

Return of the Highlanders, #3

Four fearless warriors return to the Highlands to claim their lands and their legacies. But all their trials on the battlefields can't prepare them for the greatest challenge yet: winning the hearts of four willful Scottish beauties.

The Warrior is an action packed historical thriller. It is the third story in Margaret Mallory's stellar Return of the Highland series. This fast paced story reunites Duncan McDonald with his one true love, Moira (sister to Duncan's best friend and Laird, Connor). Seven years ago the young lovers were parted by deceit and betrayal. Duncan was sent to the battlefields of France along with Connor and his cousins Ian and Alex. And poor Moira was wed to a vicious man of her father’s choosing. Now the old Laird is dead and the four warriors have returned to reclaim their legacy from Connor's usurper uncle, Hugh. Connor sends his right hand man, Duncan, to the rescue after the old witch who foresaw the warriors destinies years ago has a bloody vision of Moira. The story was riveting as Duncan fights to save the woman he has never stopped loving ...and the son he never knew he had.

What I loved about this story: Duncan. I've been intrigued by his character ever since reading the first book in this series (The Guardian). Three emotionally charged scenes stand out in my mind. (1) The scene where Duncan sees Moira for the first time since they were parted. Although, I understood her reasons, when she coldly stated that she didn't remember Duncan at all...I just wanted to snatch that girl up and shake some sense into her. (2) Then there was the moment when he saw Ragnall for the first time and realized that the boy was his own son. Ms. Mallory did a superb job of showcasing Duncan's sense of betrayal that Moira never took one of many opportunities to inform him that he was a father. It was an eye opener for Duncan and a tearjerker for me. (3) Finally, the beach scene where he confronted his own father who was threatening Moira and Ragnall. It was a heartbreaking scene. This reader was saddened that such an honorable man had to realize the depth of his father's depravity. At least the villain partially redeemed his honor by asking Duncan to look after his half-sister.

Margaret Mallory is an amazing writer...capable of evoking strong emotions with her stories. While I enjoyed the first two books in this stellar series...The Warrior is by far my favorite one yet. The storyline was fast paced and action filled. It was exciting and full of emotional scenes. This reader can only hope that the final book in this series (Connor's story) will be half as good as this one.
