Sugarwater Ranch

Salt Creek Cowboys, #1

I love cowboy romance so I really loved this one. It's a realistic story about two slightly imperfect people who find the strength inside to change their lives and grab their chance at happiness. The entire story seemed so real because the writer didn't take the usual shortcuts. It's not a fairytale romance and the road to love isn't always smooth. I felt like I was right there with Sean and Catherine ... urging them to make the right choices and feeling their frustrations as they stumbled. What I'm trying to say is that I felt a lot of connection with the characters and really got into the story. So kudos to the author for making me feel connected to the characters. That is exactly what I look for in a good story.

I really enjoyed reading about Sean. He's a hard drinking, hard living cowboy whose life is on a downward spiral. The writer wasn't pulling any punches with Sean. I saw him at his lowest point and then watched as he put his life back together again. What held my interest was how the author showed every nuance of his journey without taking away from the romantic aspect of the story. Catherine is a bit different than the women he usually goes for and he is intrigued by her. She's got her own problems with drinkers and she lets him have it over his drinking. Things don't go as Sean planned when he tries to reach out to the stubborn Cat and there were times that I felt bad for him. But then Cat's past was explained and I could see her point.

It was touching to watch as they both made some mistakes and hurt each other. It was bittersweet as Sean saw that he was in a bad place and so very rewarding as he worked hard to fix it. It didn't happen overnight. Their romance was more of a slow burning flame and that made it even sweeter. The story also had a slow building suspense and a villain that I absolutely hated. The bad guy kind of snuck up on everybody but the confrontation was very climactic. I really loved how the story ended, romantic and sweet, and it made all my nail biting worth it.

This is a great book about real people who are struggling with real issues. It's an emotional roller coaster ride that I enjoyed reading. I recommend this one to everyone.

Sean O’Connell’s life is perfect, or it was until his partying lifestyle affected his bull riding. Now he’s ended the season too broke to leave the Northwest for the warm southern rodeos. When a wild night with his buddies gets out of hand, he wakes up naked, staring into the angry eyes of a strange woman. His infallible O’Connell charm gets him nowhere with the dark-haired beauty. It’s obvious she’s not his usual good-time girl, so why can’t he forget her?

Bar-manager Catherine Silvera finds a waterlogged, unconscious cowboy freezing to death in front of the Sugarwater Bar. She saves his life--then runs faster than a jackrabbit with a coyote on its tail. Any man who makes his living rodeoing is bad news, especially if he thinks partying is part of the competition. He’s everything she doesn’t want in a man, so why can’t she shake her attraction to the rugged cowboy?
