Dark Runner

LodeStar Series Book 5

This is book 3.5 in the Lodestar Series. Readers should read the previous books to understand what's going on in this one.

Tal Darkrunner has been the specter in Kiri's te Nawa's past and he wants to be her future, but she's fallen for Logan Stark. Both men are alpha's, both men are ruthless, but Tal runs on the seedier side of life, takes huge chances all the time and likes to live on the edge. What he doesn't understand is that is what repelled Kiri in the first place, and he won't ever catch up at the rate he's going. Enter Scala. She has an eerie resemblance to Kiri but she activates all his buttons, and accepts all his facets, even the dark ones. She revels in the life he embraces and he slowly starts to awaken from the dream he envisioned with Kiri. Unfortunately, Scala starts out as an illusion of circumstance.

Tal is downright scary, but has a softer side that only his coterie see. While he fights dirty, he protects those who are loyal and takes down those that are repugnant in their choices. I would liken him to a naughty Robin Hood at times, with a bit of your standard James Bond villain thrown in. New Seattle is rough and he and his closest friends Darry and Trix came up the hard way, but then so did Scala. Problem is she got out, but then got dragged back in.

Scala is Serpentian, and I get a feeling that whole species walks the dark side just a bit. You've got to feel sorry for Scala's set backs and the backlash from her trusting a man. Now collared and chipped, she's persona non grata and willing to do anything to get a life back. She's drawn to Tal and leery at the same time. He's just the kind of man she wants but knows she can't trust. When he starts pushing for more than he seems willing to give, then the fireworks really start. The chemistry of these two was off the charts at times. And when they added Trix and Darry to their bedtime activities as well.

This was a little steamier than I expected with the multiple sex partner aspect, but that is all directed by Tal; Scala (and I) were never in doubt where his heart lay. A little teasing about the next book in the Lodestar Series, which will unfortunately be delayed. I recommend this entire series as it has a little bit of everything; adventure, sci-fi, romance, erotica and most of all, is well written and entertaining.
