Darkness Becomes Her

Ali has always been different. Growing up as a foster kid is never easy. Combine that with weird eyes and long pale hair that can't be changed in anyway is a recipe for being a freak. But finally she has found a foster family that cares for her. They own a bailbonding business, taught her self defense and weaponry so that when she turns eighteen she can work for them. With them she has learned about trust and love but she can't escape the urge to find out about her past. So with her foster parents blessing she goes looking for her past. When that investigation leads her to New 2, the rebuilt New Orleans, she has no choice but to follow. Here Ari isn't looked at as different as everyone else in this town is strange like her. But the reality she uncovers is more strange than she could ever imagine.

All I knew about this book going in was that it was written by Kelly Gay under the pseudonym Kelly Keaton and that it took place in New Orleans. Since both are on my list of favorite things, I knew it was going to be great. It didn't disappoint in any way!  This book has it all;  little bit apocalyptic since a hurricane destroyed New Orleans, paranormal since the town is filled with werewolves, witches, and vampires, and some romance. Add that to the totally surprising Greek mythology angle and this is the brew that turns me into a fangirl. So much so that I am going out on release day to purchase it so I can have that gorgeous cover in all its glory.  Ari has had a rough life, growing up with mostly indifferent abusive foster ones. Looking freakish didn't help matters so she isn't exactly the trusting sort. She comes to New 2 completely alone, not knowing what she will face. What she finds are kids just like her. While they are all great characters and live in this totally kicking decrepit house in the Garden District, my complete and total affection belongs to the character of Violet. With her pet white alligator, Pascal, she stole my heart right along with Ari's. As she starts to uncover the truth, I could hardly put the book down. I never knew what was going to happen next! I love that! This book is so creepy and describes New Orleans so perfectly it made me long to be there. Ms. Keaton is going to take YA genre by storm joining the likes of P.C. and Kristin Cast. Luckily this is the start of a series with the next one coming in February 2012 and I will be desperate to get my hands on it!

Ari can’t help feeling lost and alone. With teal eyes and freakish silver hair that can’t be changed or destroyed, Ari has always stood out. And after growing up in foster care, she longs for some understanding of where she came from and who she is.

Her search for answers uncovers just one message from her long dead mother: Run. Ari can sense that someone, or something, is getting closer than they should. But it’s impossible to protect herself when she doesn’t know what she’s running from or why she is being pursued.

She knows only one thing: she must return to her birthplace of New 2, the lush rebuilt city of New Orleans. Upon arriving, she discovers that New 2 is very...different. Here, Ari is seemingly normal. But every creature she encounters, no matter how deadly or horrifying, is afraid of her.

Ari won’t stop until she knows why. But some truths are too haunting, too terrifying, to ever be revealed.
