Anya Kalinczyk is a special type of psychic medium known as a lantern. She is drawn to spirits and is able to absorb these spirits and devour them as part of her abilities. During the day, she works as an investigator for the Detroit Fire Department and is in the middle of an investigation where an arsonist is setting fires around the city in hopes of summoning an ancient fire entity that could level the city. Anya also spends quite a bit of her time as part of a ghost hunter group absorbing malevolent spirits and demons that are haunting people. Anya mistakenly devours a nasty demon from a teenage girl, that decides that Anya would make a perfect host for her and she starts to slowly take over Anya and manipulates her to do what she wants. Now, Anya is in a fight for her life as well as trying to protect the city from an arsonist that intends to burn Detroit down to the ground.
When I first started to read this novel, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Anya is a character that I have never encountered before and I was excited to see where this story would take me. The thing that I liked about Anya was that she had her own demons to fight while trying to help solve the arsons. She blames herself for her mother’s death and that she devours spirits as part of being a Lantern. She has no idea why she is the way that she is, but accepts it and tries to provide some good in the world by devouring bad spirits. I loved Sparky, her fire elemental guardian, who is a wonderful addition to the story and I‘m curious to learn of his background since Anya herself doesn‘t know how he came to be. This novel had me hooked from the very beginning and I can’t wait to read “Sparks” which just came out a little while ago.
A sizzling debut depicts a Detroit where phantoms invade urban life and a supernatural arsonist seeks an ancient power to leave the city in cinders.
