Rescue Me Romances! - The Romance Zone
Can you hear Aretha singin’ in the background? If not, put her on … I’ll wait.
Okay, all set? Then here’s my favorite author quote for the month, by Pauline Baird Jones, writer of romantic suspense and sci fi romance.
Pauline says “For me, the best stories involve a mutual rescue, and not just from danger. But from loneliness, etc. That's why I love romance, because it's about so much more than just the plot.”
I so agree. The outer adventure is important, but I want lots of inner pain, struggle and redemption, don’t you?
So for your summer reading pleasure, here are some fabulous romances with as much, or more, going on in our heroines’ and heroes’ hearts as outside them.
I’m all in for diggin’ up bones in New Orleans with this heroine. She’s a forensic surgeon, which clearly means she’s a tough chick. But throw the mob in the mix, and somebody’s gonna need rescued, right?
Dead Spaces; the Big Uneasy 2.0, by Pauline Baird Jones. Romantic suspense.
Be careful what you dig for...
A forensic surgeon in the New Orleans Coroner's Office--and part of her dad's Baker's Dozen--Hannah Baker thought she knew where to dig, how and what to slice, and when to walk away.
But when her big brother gets her involved in the exhumation of a couple of old coffins, she realizes the past can't be ignored. Not when its been simmering up a big pile of trouble for longer than Hannah's born days.
Only New Orleans could produce a "Baked" gumbo of the mob, shadowy figures from the past, annoying figures from the present, murders, attempted murders, and a really cute detective who is technically off limits on account of he's her big brother's partner.
Good thing NOPD Detective Logan Ferris doesn't know the meaning of "off limits," cuz once more the Big Easy is getting mighty uneasy.
There’s crime, and then there’s crime that didn’t start out to be crime, but sort of … snowballed—in hell. This hero may be the smartest dude you’ll ever meet, but even smart, to-die-for sexy dudes need rescued from themselves … in the sweetest way.
Love Hacked, Knitting in the City, Bk 3 by Penny Reid. Contemporary.
There are three things you need to know about Sandra Fielding:
1) She makes all her first dates cry,
2) She hasn't been kissed in over two years, and
3) She knows how to knit.
Sandra has difficulty removing her psychotherapist hat. Of her last 30 dates, 29 have ended the same way: the man sobbing uncontrollably.
After one such disaster, Sandra--near desperation and maybe a little tipsy--gives in to a seemingly harmless encounter with her hot waiter, Alex.
Argumentative, secretive, and hostile Alex may be the opposite of everything Sandra knows is right for her. But now, the girl who has spent all her life helping others change for the better, must find a way to cope with falling for a younger man who refuses to change at all.So how is she supposed to rescue him from his isolation and erm … possible virginity?
This is a full-length, 110k word novel and can be read as a standalone.
Hackers awaaaaay … in another fabulous story.
The Kathleen Turner Series: Turn the Page (Kindle Worlds Novella) by Allie K. Adams. Rom suspense. From the USA Today bestselling author of the TREX romantic suspense series..
He's never met a system he couldn't hack or a situation he couldn't charm his way out of. Until he met her.
It's twenty years later - Kane Dennon, son of Kade Dennon and Kathleen Turner, is now twenty-six and following in his father's footsteps in every sense of the word. He's estranged from his family and living in Seattle, has more regrets than friends, and doesn't expect to live to see twenty-seven. His latest job isn't exactly going as planned, thanks to a sexy, yet nosy neighbor catching him piggybacking on her Wi-Fi and interrupting him before he can finish the hack. Just as he leaves to confront her, shots erupt, shredding his apartment. Kane races next door, expecting to find his neighbor curled into a ball, screaming as bullets whistle by. Instead he finds her shooting back.
If it weren't for bad luck, she'd have no luck at all. That's CSI tech Eleanor Rigby's motto. Make that ex-CSI tech. After being fired for stealing evidence from a crime scene, she can't get another job to save her life. If she doesn't find some way to make money, she can add homeless to the list. Leave it to her to have the proverbial tall, dark, and gorgeous man living next door--and he turns out to be a criminal. When she's literally caught in the crossfire, she ends up on the run with him, dodging more bullets while doing everything in her power not to fall for his charm.
Everything about Ellie draws Kane in--from her fiery red hair to her amazing eye for detail. He could use her specific set of skills to figure out what his latest employer is up to and have her help track the evidence. When they discover the hack is part of a much bigger plan, one that involves them both, they must find a way to stop it before it's too late.
Sometimes life isn't about the choices we make, but how we handle the consequences.
All right, time to cool it down a little bit … just kidding! This next romance may have ice underfoot, but it is hotter than the pavement outside Walmart on a summer afternoon. And you may recognize similar infamous sports figures here (but this version is sooo much sweeter and sexier). If anyone needs rescuing, it’s these two!
Ice Games, Games series, Bk 3, by Jessica Clare. Contemporary Sports.
Zara Pritchard is a has-been. Once a very young Olympic darling, she humiliated herself in front of worldwide camera and skating fans. Now an adult, she's been reduced to skating in a dinosaur costume and giving lessons at the local mall...which is why she's excited when she's offered a chance to sub on a TV show, Ice Dancing with the Stars. If she wins the show, this could be the break she needs.
There's just one problem - her partner.
Ty Randall is a MMA bad boy looking to fix his image problem. Sure, he's got the nickname of 'Ty the MMA Biter'. Sure, he might have bit a guy's nose off in the cage. But putting him on a reality TV show? A skating reality TV show? He's not interested. He'll do the minimum to fix his image and call it a day.
But when wash-out meets flame-out, sparks fly and tempers flare. And Ty and Zara start to realize that maybe this partnership might be just as steamy off the ice as on it... and they also learn that there is so much more than meets the eye to both of them.
And sometimes hearts that have been wounded hide behind anger.
And speaking of major sports figures flaming out … this world rugby star needs to be rescued from the image forced on him by an unscrupulous ex-lover. And maybe he can rescue his rescuer from her self-imposed prison of hiding behind her computer instead of partaking in real life.
The Hooker and the Hermit, by L.H. Cosway and Penny Reid. Contemporary sports & Social Media.
New York’s Finest
Blogging as *The Socialmedialite*
LADIES AND GENTS! I have an announcement!
You know that guy I featured on my blog a few months ago? The really, really hot Irish rugby player who plays the position of ‘hooker’ in the RLI (Rugby League International)? The one with the anger management issues, the body of a gladiator and the face of a movie star? The one with the questionable fashion choices leading me to ask whether he was the lovechild of a leprechaun and a hobbit? Ronan Fitzpatrick? Yeah, that guy. Well, I have a confession to make…
Annie Catrel, social media expert extraordinaire at Davidson & Croft Media and clandestine celebrity blogger, can make anyone shine in the court of public opinion. She is the Socialmedialite, anonymous creator of New York’s Finest and the internet’s darling. Virtual reality is Annie’s forte, but actual reality? Not so much.
Ronan Fitzpatrick, aka the best hooker the world of rugby has seen in decades, despises the media—social or otherwise. The press has spun a web of lies depicting him as rugby’s wild and reckless bad boy. Suspended from his team, Ronan has come to Manhattan to escape the drama, lay low, fly under the radar. Only, Ronan isn’t easy to overlook, and he can’t escape the notice of the Socialmedialite…
When Ronan is sent to Davidson & Croft Media to reshape his public image, he never expects to cross paths with shy but beautiful Annie, nor does he expect his fierce attraction to her. He couldn’t be happier when her boss suggests pairing them together.
What lengths will Annie take to keep her virtual identity concealed? And what happens when the hooker discovers who the hermit really is?
The Hooker and the Hermit is a collaboration between authors L.H. Cosway and Penny Reid, is a full length 110k word novel, and is a standalone.
Okay, I truly did not realize how many sports romances I’ve been reading this past month! But these are so good—and this last one is so different. Talk about a slow build to an amazing finish. And if you have a wee bit of a crush on Beckham, feel free to picture his face here … and hang on, it’s gonna be a bumpy ride … and you won’t believe who rescues whom.
Kulti, by Mariana Zapata. Contemporary sports.
“Trust me, I’ve wanted to punch you in the face a time or five.”
When the man you worshipped as a kid, soccer star Reiner Kulti, becomes your coach, it’s supposed to be the greatest thing in the world. Keywords: supposed to.
It didn’t take a week for twenty-seven-year-old Sal Casillas to wonder what she’d seen in the international soccer icon—why she’d ever had his posters on her wall, or ever envisioned marrying him and having super-playing soccer babies.
Sal had long ago gotten over the worst non-break-up in the history of imaginary relationships with a man that hadn’t known she’d existed. So she isn’t prepared for this version of Reiner Kulti who shows up to her team’s season: a quiet, reclusive shadow of the explosive, passionate man he’d once been.
Nothing could have prepared her for the man she got to know.
Or the murderous urges he brought out in her.
This was going to be the longest season of her life.
Back to romantic suspense, of the most important kind … saving a child in danger. Who you gonna call? A Marine, of course!
Expendable, Shadow Finders series, Bk 1 byMaggie Jaimeson. Romantic suspense.
Children with no birth records and a soldier with PTSD together must define the value of human life.
Jenna Mosier is on a mission to save her murdered sister’s child. Estranged for ten years after a bitter fight, the trail is as cold as her dead sibling. The only glimmer of hope is the place her sister’s body and a ten-year old boy were abandoned…the backyard of Reed Adler, retired Marine Special Ops.
Working together, Jenna and Reed piece together a mystery involving missing children and biogenetics research … and find they have more than justice and revenge in common. But the closer they get to answers, and each other, the more deadly the game becomes. With their hearts and lives on the line, they must decide what they are willing to risk to save one young boy.
This is the first book in a new suspense series where a group of former Marines become Shadow Finders. They help find those who have disappeared, have no identity, or are presumed dead.
