Love and Sports with Author Debra Elise - The Romance Zone
email@example.com NOTE: Hi, Cathryn Cade here! This month I’ve invited debut author Debra Elise to share some of her fave sports romances with you. I know you’ll love her choices. See you in May …
Alpha’s Scoring On and Off the Field
Debra Elise says … April is my book birthday month and the start of major league baseball. (Go Mariners!) I’m celebrating by sharing with you some of my favorite sports romance authors. I’m not partial to any particular sport when I read; for me it’s always about the story and the characters! If you haven’t read a sports romance, I encourage you to give one or two a try. Because really, who can pass up an alpha sports guy with a ripped body who has talent on the field/ice/gridiron and off; especially when he’s dealing with a heroine who matches him move for move?
Do you follow any sports teams? I’m a big Seattle fan, both Seahawks and Mariners. I’m a sucker for a romance with an athlete who plays as hard off the field as he does on. It’s what compelled me to write a sports romance.
I’ve picked some favorite authors to share with you and I hope they intrigue you enough to go out and read one of these hot athletes score their very own happy-ever-after.

UNEXPECTED RUSH by Jaci Burton (Play-By-Play series, Book 11)
When I read my first Jaci Burton Play-by-Play novel, I was all in. She is a master at weaving sports and hot romance into one can’t-be-put-down book.
In the new Play-By-Play novel by the New York Times bestselling author of All Wound Up, a football hot shot and his best friend’s sister are breaking all the rules.
All the Right Moves
For Barrett Cassidy, playing defense for the Tampa Hawks is a dream come true. And now he may have discovered his dream woman. Harmony Evans, once the sweet, gawky teenage sister of his best friend and teammate has grown into a smart, gorgeous woman with moves he finds hard to resist. But he knows he can’t get involved with his best friend’s sister—it’s guy code.
Harmony has always gone after what she wants with single-minded determination, from her independence to her education to her career in interior design. She never expected her youthful crush on Barrett to develop into something deeper. And she’s not about to let some ridiculous man rules or her brother stand in her way.
When the chemistry is this combustible, lines tend to get crossed. And when Barrett and Harmony’s secret gets out, it just might be game over...
POWER PLAY by Sophia Henry – (Pilots Hockey, Book Two)
I’ve just discovered Pilots Hockey and its talented author Sophia Henry (who also turns out to be a #teamwatterson sister (same agent)). This is a moving story of friends FINALLY admitting their feelings for each other!
In Sophia Henry’s blistering follow-up to Delayed Penalty, hailed as “sexy, fun, and full of angst” by L. P. Dover, a good girl and a hockey hunk face off against expectations—and this match is guaranteed to see plenty of action.
Beneath her innocent facade, Gabriella Bertucci has her reasons to be standoffish with guys. Especially guys like Landon Taylor, a star defenseman on the minor-league Detroit Pilots and the object of a serious crush since he first walked into her family’s market. But when Landon comes through for her in a moment of crisis, Gaby starts to wonder if there might be more to Landon than hard muscles and fast skates.
Landon isn’t afraid of telling Gaby that he’s got it for her bad. The problem is, she seems unwilling to believe it. And though Landon enjoys his reputation as a cool-headed athlete, he hates losing—both on the rink and off. It’s his competitiveness that makes him so damn good at what he does . . . but it also makes him just a little bit complicated.
One minute Gaby’s tempted to give in; the next, she’s getting cold feet. How can she trust a guy who’s destined for bigger and better things to stick around? Then again, when Landon pulls her close with those powerful arms, the only thing that matters is right now.
GETTING WOUND UP: A Sapphire Falls/ Love Between the Bases novel by Jennifer Bernard and Erin Nicholas
Two fab authors; twice the hijinks! Who can beat this combination? A fun friends to lovers story written in three parts – addicting.
A fun, flirty crossover novel from bestselling authors Jennifer Bernard (the Love Between the Bases series) and Erin Nicholas (the Sapphire Falls series)
Caitlyn Murray has never let on that she's had fantasies about her brother's friend Eli Anderson for years. She'd do anything for the sexy, baseball star who's given it all up to stay in Sapphire Falls and take care of his family, but she and Eli are friends. Just friends.
So when her brother hatches a plan to get Eli to the pro baseball try-out for the Kilby Catfish that he has dreamed of and deserves, Caitlyn is all in. After all, what's a little kidnapping among friends?
A spot on the pitcher's mound for the Catfish isn't the only tempting thing about the spontaneous road trip. Eli already knows that Caitlyn is as sweet as the candies she makes for the Sapphire Falls bakery, but alone with her overnight in the tiny motel room in Kansas, it's impossible to resist the urge to take a little taste.
But when that taste leads to falling for the girl next door just as his front door is moving hundreds of miles away, can Eli really have it all? Or do they have too many strikes against them?
BODYCHECKING by Jami Davenport (Game On in Seattle series, Book Eight)
I began reading sports romances in part thanks to Jami and her Seattle Lumberjacks series, specifically Fourth and Goal. I consumed it on a plane ride home several years ago. Her next installment in that series is coming soon…and it will feature a baseball player, can’t wait!
The wild child of the family, Bellani Maxwell, endures a brutal attack and runs to hockey star and occasional hookup Cedric Pedersen for comfort and healing. Only Cedric is tired of their on-again, off-again relationship, and he wants to be all-in or all-out. Can Bella move past her trauma and finally commit, or will she let him go one final time. CONTENT WARNING: Contains graphic and potentially disturbing descriptions of an assault.
CHANGE MY MIND by Elley Arden (The Kemmons Brothers Baseball Series Book 2)
This book by Ms. Arden solidified my love for the Kemmon brothers and this series. Grey Kemmons has some deep wounds but Nel Parker is up to the challenge. Look for her new book, THE CHANGE UP, which releases May 16!
Nothing is going to stop Nel Parker from raising her fledgling real estate agency to the top of the heap. When she returns two dogs to a million-dollar mansion with a dumpster in the driveway, she thinks the house is her lucky break. But the owner turns out to be a moody professional baseball player with a complicated agenda of his own, leaving Nel to fear her plans for real estate domination are doomed.
Centerfielder Grey Kemmons is spending the off-season renovating the house he inherited from his father. It's a miserable job, but he's doing it anyway - because somebody has to pay back the money his father stole. When a spitfire of a woman in a surprisingly attractive package shows up wanting to list the house, he agrees to pacify her with a tour, never expecting the mutually beneficial business relationship that ensues.
As weeks go by, business turns to pleasure with Nel and Grey believing the temporary nature of their time together will protect their hearts. Too bad nothing can protect them or prepare them for love.
FIRST STAR I SEE TONIGHT by Susan Elizabeth Phillips (Chicago Stars Football series)
This book is set to release this summer, and I cannot wait. SEP is one of my absolute favorite authors and one of the first authors who started the sports romance trend and set the standard.
A star quarterback and a feisty detective play for keeps in this sporty, sexy, sassy novel—a long-awaited new entry in the beloved, award-winning, New York Times bestselling author’s fan-favorite Chicago Stars football series.
Piper Dove is a woman with a dream—to become the best detective in the city of Chicago. First job? Trail former Chicago Stars quarterback, Cooper Graham. Problem? Graham’s spotted her, and he’s not happy.
Which is why a good detective needs to think on her feet. “The fact is . . . I’m your stalker. Not full-out barmy. Just . . . mildly unhinged.”
Piper soon finds herself working for Graham himself, although not as the bodyguard he refuses to admit he so desperately needs. Instead, he’s hired her to keep an eye on the employees at his exclusive new nightclub. But Coop’s life might be in danger, and Piper’s determined to protect him, whether he wants it or not. (Hint: Not!) If only she weren’t also dealing with a bevy of Middle Eastern princesses, a Pakistani servant girl yearning for freedom, a teenager who just wants to fit in, and an elderly neighbor demanding Piper find her very dead husband.
And then there’s Cooper Graham himself, a legendary sports hero who always gets what he wants—even if what he wants is a feisty detective hell bent on proving she’s as tough as he is.
From the bustling streets of Chicago to a windswept lighthouse on Lake Superior to the glistening waters of Biscayne Bay, two people who can’t stand to lose will test themselves and each other to discover what matters most.
With spring upon us and love in the air, hopefully one of my picks will bring you hours of quality reading time with a new favorite author and a hot athlete. Below is my debut novel from Bloomsbury Spark.
SAVING MAVERICK by Debra Elise (The Outlaws of Baseball, Book One)
Maverick Jansen and Kelsey Sullivan fall into a complicated game of PR strategy by day and searing passion by night where they both find a new meaning to fast and hard.
He needs someone like her …
Rand ‘Maverick’ Jansen has what it takes to be the star pitcher of the Idaho Outlaws—talent, talent and more talent. Trouble is, since his younger brother’s death in a car wreck, a mysterious ‘injury’ to Mav’s throwing arm has him sidelined. And trying to find solace in a series of all-too public drunken parties isn’t aiding his cause with the league, or the team’s owner. If Mav doesn’t accept help to work out his grief and repair his reputation, he may end up in the dugout for good. He just didn’t expect that help to come from a gorgeous little spitfire in sexy stiletto heels.
She needs to stay far away from guys like him …
Kelsey Sullivan is a publicist, and a good one. She’s not a big fan of bad boy baseball players. But when the owner of the Outlaws, a close friend, asks her to take his star pitcher from media strike out to home run, she has to say yes. But she’d rather eat her favorite Chanel purse. Mav Jansen is everything she’s spent her adult life staying far, far away from—a sports celebrity who seems to consider the world his personal playground. She just didn’t expect him to be quite so gorgeous and irresistible.
When life throws them a curve ball, is it too late to learn that love can save them both?

Debra Elise lives with her husband and their two sons in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. She loves to read, nap, write, and watches entirely too much reality T.V. She also enjoys hanging out with other author-type individuals and teasing her three ‘boys’ into displaying their killer smiles. Most days find her carpooling, avoiding laundry and daydreaming about her characters and how to make them come alive for her readers.
