For the Love of Historical Romance - Melting Pot
In late September, I attended the Historical Romance Retreat (HRR) created by the ever lovely Renee Bernard and Delilah Marvelle. HRR is a reader centric event focused on creating experiences that allow attendees to step back in time to their favorite era. Though not required, costumes are encouraged and this year they had a Gentlemen’s Track that allowed the guys to get in on the costume and workshop fun.
During HRR, I made fancy fascinators with Eloisa James; concocted my own perfume with Victoria Vane, and had Low Tea with Kate Pearce. I also had brunch and took goofy pictures with Jade Lee.
In honor of all the good times at HRR, let’s add the complex flavors of historical romance to The Melting Pot.
I am a HUGE Beverly Jenkins fan. I am ashamed to admit that I only recently discovered her….until a few years ago, I was almost exclusively a sci-fi and fantasy chick….but now I’ve been bitten by the historical roman bug. Know that any book by Ms. Jenkins is a great read that is meticulously researched and full of characters that spring off the page. I had the pleasure of meeting Ms. Jenkins at RWA Nationals this year.
Breathless by Beverly Jenkins
A strong-willed beauty finds herself in the arms of the handsome drifter from her past, in this second book in the sizzling series set in the Old West, from USA Today Bestselling Author Beverly Jenkins
As manager of one of the finest hotels in Arizona Territory, Portia Carmichael has respect and stability—qualities sorely missing from her harsh childhood. She refuses to jeopardize that by hitching herself to the wrong man. Suitors are plentiful, but none of them has ever looked quite as tempting as the family friend who just rode into town…and none has looked at her with such intensity and heat.
Duchess. That’s the nickname Kent Randolph gave Portia when she was a young girl. Now she’s a stunning, intelligent woman—and Kent has learned his share of hard lessons. After drifting through the West, he’s learned the value of a place to settle down, and in Portia’s arms he’s found that and more. But convincing her to trust him with her heart, not just her passion, will be the greatest challenge he’s known—and one he intends to win…
Jade Lee is a real hoot! It was so much fun to meet her at HRR! Her humor shines through in her in Rakes and Rogues series. I love Jade Lee so much, with the help of my friend Jessie I incorporated one of Ms. Lee’s covers into my costume. (See the hat in the picture below.)
As Rich as a Rogue is a quick and laugh-out-loud read for a cool fall day. I HIGHLY recommend this book and the series.
As Rich as a Rogue by Jade Lee
"a blend of humor and action-adventure with a few steamy scenes of passion"—Fresh Fiction
Peter George Norwood, Lord Whitly, returns to London a wealthy man in want of a wife. And who better but the woman who fires his heart like no other, the "Wayward Welsh" heiress Mari Powel?

Mari is outraged, and is going to show him—and everyone else—what she's made of. Little does she know, the unrepentant Lord Whitly has been dreaming of her all this time. Now he'll do anything to win the wager—along with Mari's heart.

Erica Ridley traveled all the way from Costa Rica to attend HRR!! It was so wonderful to meet her and learn about her stories. Lord of Pleasure is the second book in her Rogues to Riches series. I look forward to reading all three. I love the line ‘Cinderella stores aren’t just for princesses…’
Lord of Pleasure by Erica Ridley
Nondescript “good girl” Miss Camellia Grenville only ever opens her mouth when forced to sing at her family’s musicales. That is, until the night she infiltrates the ton’s most scandalous masquerade ball on behalf of her sister, and finds herself in the arms—and the bed—of the one man she’d sworn to hate.
Irresistibly arrogant and unapologetically sensuous, infamous rake Lord Wainwright always gets his way. When he accepts a wager to turn his rakish image respectable in just forty days, he never anticipates falling for an anonymous masked lover...or that discovering her identity would destroy them both.
In the Rogues to Riches historical romance series, Cinderella stories aren’t just for princesses… Sigh-worthy Regency rogues sweep strong-willed young ladies into whirlwind romance with rollicking adventure.
1. Lord of Chance

I have a confession to make. I’m a time traveler. I love flinging myself into the future, then hurtling fast to an alternative past. In my usual time-space-dimension, I’m a mechanical engineer and business woman. So, I have a natural penchant for hover cars and steam or aether powered engines. Though I was born in the wrong era, I’m actually a child of the sixties – 1860, 1960, 2060.
My stories feature strong women, who know how to wield their minds like weapons. Their men are smart and often controlling….but, rest assured, my female leads give them a run for their money. They strive to follow their hearts and dreams for the betterment of themselves and their loved ones. Like my life, all of my stories feature a diverse cast of characters.
With my business partner, Therese Patrick, I work to demystify marketing principles for my author friends. Our first book, Author Marketing 101 Guide & Journal, was published by Gazebo Gardens Publishing and released in October 2013.
Steampunk, futurist, blerd, artist, author, and marketing maven…a real creative force of nature – that’s me in a nutshell.
