Current Release: Losing It
Describe your current release in two sentences?
17 is a difficult age for my hero BJ: neither his three friends, his secretive family, nor Roger, the decor-loving football hooligan, can help him in his search to find himself and lose his virginity. It's a darkly comic novel about love, sex, death (and goths) which will interest anyone who likes British TV teen dramas and edgy comedy.
What are you working on?
I've just finished a non-fiction book which will be published about the same time as Losing It. Called 'Crime and Punishment in Victorian London' it's published by Pen and Sword (UK) and is gives reader a street level view of the pickpockets, con-artists and serial killers who gave Dickensian London a bad name.
Getting a book to market often takes a village. Who has helped you on the way?
The person who helped me most was the writer Leo Hollis, who was an editor at 4th Estate when he picked the manuscript of my first novel, 'The Snake Oil Dickens Man' from the slush pile, apparently because he liked the title! He also edited my second novel, 'The Edge of the Crowd'.
Do you have a favorite or interesting reader meet place?
Definitely. My favorite place to meet readers is in the pub, especially if they are buying:)
What is your favorite way to procrastinate?
I never procrastinate. It's a filthy habit.
Thanks for looking at this. I'm undecided about what my next project will be - whether there's a sequel to Losing It depends on the feedback I get from you and how much you want to know what happens to BJ and his three friends, Diesel, Clive and Farouk. Do let me know!
