Current Release: Cruising for Death--The 5th Kate Jones Thriller
Describe your current release in two sentences?
Kate Jones and sexy Sheriff Cole Anderson are on a luxury cruise in the Caribbean when a passenger dies of an apparent heart attack and the ship is boarded by modern-day pirates. Along with two other passengers, Kate is kidnapped by a long-lost enemy who wants to settle an old score.
Please describe your writing environment.
I usually work on my laptop in my office, but occasionally venture outside into the real world and write on my patio, at the local coffee shop, in the car, wherever I can steal a few moments. Once I'm into the story, it doesn't matter where I am--the world recedes to the background and I'm wherever the story takes place. Talk about a fun job!
What are you working on?
I've just finished a spooky Kate Jones short that will be included in an anthology for Halloween, and I'm currently working on the sequel to Serial Date--I've really missed the interplay between Leine Basso and Santiago Jensen! After that, I'll start writing the 6th Kate Jones Thriller, which I've been thinking about for months and can't wait to dig into!
What do you feel blessed with?
I feel blessed to be able to make up stories for a living and share them with such awesome readers. I also am blessed to have a wonderful partner who puts up with my crazy writing schedule and who loves to cook (he used to be a chef :-) There are so many wonderful things to be thankful for, I'd run out of room listing them all!
What was your childhood ambition?
I wanted to be a female James Bond. Or a dancer. Then I wanted to play piano in a honkytonk, but found out I had stage fright (!) --I'm sooo over that now, LOL
What is your favorite TV show?
When I do take time to watch TV, I usually opt for Jon Stewart or the news. Otherwise, I'm a movie slut, pure and simple--especially the action-packed kind!
What career fields have you worked in?
I've worked as a massage therapist, a certified Feng Shui consultant, managed the tasting room at a winery in California, fileted fish at a fish market on the coast, sold hot air balloon rides in Napa Valley, and worked in the mud baths of Calistoga. All that, along with several 9-5 jobs in higher education, shipping and the banking industry. Obviously, I tend to get bored easily :-)
What are your plans for the summer? Any books you are looking forward to?
Camping, barbeques, hanging out at the beach, writing, visiting with my parents who are here from Arizona, tending my mini "farm" of gorgeous veggies... As for books, I'm looking forward to reading all the ones on my "TBR" pile :-)
How was your road to publication?
I've been writing seriously since 2006 and published the first Kate Jones Thriller, Bad Spirits, in 2010, followed by 3 more Kate Jones novellas: Dead of Winter, Death Rites and Touring for Death. Then came Serial Date, which is currently a semi-finalist in the Kindle Book Review's Best Indie Book of 2012 (Yay!)
Writing is a LOT of hard work, but I love every minute of it and never get bored. Going indie took a lot of the angst out of writing for me, knowing that my work will be published whenever I finish the last draft. The best part of having my work available is being able to connect with such awesome readers!
If you could time travel, where would you travel to and why?
Either Florence, Italy in the late 15th century because of the exciting advances being made as well as being able to breathe the same air as Michelangelo, Raphael, Botticelli and Leonardo da Vinci; or 1920s Paris, so I could hobnob with the likes of Josephine Baker, Picasso, Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald.
Thanks so much to Night Owl Reviews for this opportunity to connect with readers--and thank you to everyone who read this far in the interview! Look for the sequel to Serial Date sometime in October and the next Kate Jones Thriller by the end of the year...and feel free to send me an email and connect on Facebook and Twitter. I love to hear from readers! Take care, DV
