Current Release: Cursed

In Alex Verus' second adventure, Alex tries to prevent the rediscovery of a ritual designed to drain the magic from living creatures. Along the way he'll have to deal with a beautiful enchantress, a monkey's paw, Luna's new boyfriend, Cinder and Deleo, and an ice mage named Belthas, and hopefully figure out which of them are trying to kill him in the process.

Please describe your writing environment.

My bed, usually shared with my dog. I've got a desk, but all I use it for is creating piles of stuff that I don't want to deal with yet.

What are you working on?

Alex Verus #4! No, I don't have a cool title, sorry. My publishers usually come up with those anyway. In my spare time I write Encyclopaedia Arcana articles for the Alex Verus website.

What was your childhood ambition?

I wanted to be an airline pilot. It's kind of fuzzy but I think my reasoning was that I wanted to fly planes, but I didn't like the idea of getting killed in a war, hence airlines rather than the Air Force. I completely forgot about it by the time I was ten years old and by the time I was a teenager I had no idea at all what I wanted to be.

What is your favorite TV show?

Babylon 5 was probably my favourite back when I was younger, though I watched a lot of Star Trek too. Lately I've been really getting into The Walking Dead, although the characters drive me crazy sometimes - seriously, guys, is it really THAT difficult to learn some basic zombie survival rules? Like "don't go off on your own"?

What career fields have you worked in?

Let's see, where to start . . . I spent a while working in a couple of different departments of the Civil Service, and after university I did a stint as a bouncer in north-central London. I've spent some time as a full-time writer and also as an English teacher, in the UK and Romania and China, then I did a couple of years studying law and I've done the odd bit of work experience for that too. Varies really.

Where do you want to travel?

I used to travel all the time when I was younger, but nowadays I'm so busy I never have the time! If I can schedule it, though, I'm hoping to do a trip to America and get to visit some of the conventions (not to mention my US relatives).

How was your road to publication? Rejection letters?

Oh hell yeah. I stopped counting the rejections after number fifty or so, and I've got entire novels sitting on my hard drive which will probably never see the light of day. I'd like to say that I got used to the rejection form letters, but to tell the truth you never really learn to shrug them off completely. All you can do is put up with them and move on.

Do you have a favorite time of the day? If so when and why

I have a habit of writing in the REALLY early hours of the morning - the 12am to 3am slot. For whatever reason I find it easier to concentrate then - maybe it's the quiet. Does make it a little hard to get up on time, though . . .

What is the best thing about being an author?

Doing something that you genuinely love and care about. It's not an easy life and you'll never get rich, but I still feel that I'm lucky to be able to do it.

If you could live in a world created by an author, which book / world would you jump into?

Hmm, tough one! I think it'd depend on who you'd get to be, wouldn't it? There are lots of books where things are great if you get to be one of the super-elite (wizards, knights, vampires, super-soldiers, Star Fleet bridge crew) but kind of suck if you're one of the common people (muggles in Harry Potter, regular joes in superhero comics, and absolutely everyone in Song of Ice and Fire).

Thanks for the interview! Alex Verus #2, Cursed, will be released by the time this goes up, and Alex Verus #3, Taken, is coming out in September. I can't say anything definite yet about the future of the series after that, but it's looking hopeful!
