The Top Five Characteristics of a Great Romance Hero by Shari Nichols
1-Bring the SEXY Back
What physical appearance or attribute makes a hero drool worthy? He must be handsome, and mouth-watering in a way that gives the reader heart palpations. He's passionate, dreamy, intelligent, and don’t forget a fantastic sense of humor. He’s complex, powerful, and always riveting. His allure forces the reader to stay up long into the night, just to see what he’ll do next. He MUST keep you guessing! He must be a great lover, physically and emotionally, invested in the heroine’s pleasure. And let’s face it, a great bod doesn’t hurt!
Apparently, Mr. Darcy of Pride and Prejudice, is still considered the sexiest of all romance heroes and yet we never see his ripped abs or bulging pecs. There are no sizzling sex scenes with Elizabeth. Their encounters are all very chaste and yet we burn when we flip through the pages. He captures our imaginations and ignites our fantasies.
2-Sexy with a side of FLAWS, please!
Perfection is boring in real life so why wouldn’t it be in our romance heroes? Does the hero start out arrogant? Is he anything like, Mr. Darcy? Does he start out rude to the heroine in the beginning? But then he eventually wins her heart? Is he a player, jumping from one bed to another because he’s hiding the deep wounds from his past? Perhaps he’s too afraid to fall head over heels and lose all control?
3-Like Neo from The Matrix, there has to be a TRANSFORMATION.
How does he go from being a bastard to our very own Prince Charming? He changes his behavior for the sake of the heroine. He’s willing to make the effort. He changes to win his true love. Now that’s hot! What are his redeemable qualities? Is he sympathetic to other characters? How do the other people in his life view him? Despite his arrogance, even Mr. Darcy’s sister adores him. He cares for the ones he loves. A great hero does things behind the scenes and doesn’t want the credit.
4-VULNERABILITY-that Nasty thirteen letter word.
No matter how alpha he is, how big or strong, he MUST be vulnerable to his own feelings and be willing to show this to the heroine. He can finally admit that being with his beloved actually makes him stronger, and happier.
5-COURAGE- the lion’s got it in spades.
A great hero is ready to run toward danger, even the emotional kind, no matter the cost. The hero must admit when he's wrong and be willing to say he's sorry. He’s willing to compromise and profess his undying love for the heroine, despite his fears. He has the guts to go after his dreams and that makes us root for him. He may not always get these things in the end, but he still has to think big!
