Someone is killing hawks in and around Shady Gap, a town in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. When the hawk killer murders a teacher as she tries to rescue a hawk, Gwen Fields, artist and teacher, calls the Shelby Animal Compound, but doesn’t understand the strange feeling she gets that she shouldn’t have given her name—until a hawk takes an arrow meant for her.
Though terrified of hawks, Gwen cares for him, not realizing the bird is a shape shifter, that he also is Cory Falconer, temporarily suspended from the compound. Drawn to Gwen despite her hatred and fear of the big birds, he agrees to work with her to find the killer.
Gwen and Cory become close as they hunt the killer, but will she learn to deal with her fear, and can Cory forget their initial meeting all those years ago?
