Boneseeker by Brynn Chapman is a Young Adult retelling of Sherlock Holmes which centers on his daughter, Arabella Holmes and Dr. Watson's son, Henry Watson. Arabella and Henry have grown up together and are best friends, at least until they kissed each other. Both didn't see each other for a number of years owing to the fact that they had to go to school - Henry to Paris and Bella to some finishing school.
The story starts of really strong by introducing us to a meeting by the villains. The story then cuts back and we see Arabella working at the The Mutter Museum. When she meets Henry for the first time, sparks begin to fly but both try not to show it.
Boneseeker is thoroughly entertaining and it feels Gothic-like but full of adventure. It is written in first person by each character alternating every few chapters. I love this twist in the first person character because it gave me a glimpse of each character's thoughts. I also love that we get to see glimpses of Sherlock and Watson throughout the book even though they are not the main characters.
I loved Arabella. She is a headstrong female and very educated, following her father’s footsteps in a time where women were relegated to the home and the ballrooms. I see her as something of an oddball but very intriguing. I really love girl power books and this one really showcased the trope well.
The only downside to this book is the mystery. I felt that there was more relationship building between Henry and Arabella that the mystery kind of took a backseat. Unfortunately, I would have wanted the author to focus more on the mystery, with the romance in the background.
Boneseeker is a fast paced, romance, adventure story perfect for reading in one sitting. I hope the author plans to write sequels because I really want to read more about Arabella and Henry!
Arabella Holmes is different than other girls her age: She doesn't fit the role of a 1900's lady. So her father, Sherlock, called in some lingering favors, and landed her a position at the Mutter Museum.
The museum was Arabella's dream; she was to become a purveyor of abnormal science, or what her uncle called a "Boneseeker."
Henry Watson arrives at the Mutter Museum with a double assignment--to become a finder of abnormal antiquities and to watch over and keep Arabella Holmes. An easy task, if he could only get her to speak to him instead of throwing knives in his general direction.
But this is no time for child's play. The two teens are assigned to a most secret exploration, when the hand of a Nephilim is unearthed in upstate New York. Soon, Arabella and Henry are caught in a fight for their lives as scientific debate swirls around them. Are the bones from a Neanderthal ... or are they living proof of fallen angels, who supposedly mated with humans according to ancient scrolls?
Sent to recover the skeleton, they discover they are the second team to have been deployed and the entire first team is dead. And now they must trust their instincts and rely on one another in order to survive and uncover the truth.
