One Night With a Hero

The Hero #2

“He was a big man. Obviously strong, apparently deadly, given his profession. She couldn't decide if his intensity thrilled her, or scared her just a little. Maybe both.”

Meeting a stranger at the park and having dinner with him, was not how Joss thought her Labor Day would go. Having a one-night stand with him in her truck was definitely not part of the plan. His depth intrigued her and the sexual chemistry incredible, but Joss was ready to move past their bit of fun. Nothing could have prepared her for what she’d open the door to the next morning. Now her life is an emotional rollercoaster and while Joss has no regrets where Brady is concerned, she isn’t about to expose herself to rejection yet again. Walking away is the only option until suddenly Joss’ decision is no longer her own and now she’ll need Brady more than ever, but can she trust him?

Cool, confident, and in control, Brady’s resolve to just get through the next couple of years until he can rejoin the army is sorely tested by a tattooed, pierced, and mesmerizing woman. Since he hadn’t foreseen becoming neighbors with her after what was supposed to be a one-night only deal, his new resolve involved her becoming his distraction. Unfortunately, the more Brady gets to know Joss, the more he wants things he never believed he could have. The issues with his father weigh heavily and before Brady can pursue Joss, he must face his fear, but the news Joss unexpectedly delivers is life altering and Brady’s control over his emotions finally breaks. When the dust finally settles, Brady becomes clear on what he wants, but is it too late?

An amazing story of how two characters with a lifetime of emotional baggage find their way to each other and finally get what they both deserve. Joss and Brady are incredibly giving and compassionate with so much to offer, but deep down feel unwanted or undeserving. They each took a different path in overcoming most of their issues, but the insecurities are still prevalent and both are wary to expose themselves to any vulnerability. It was easy to fall for these characters and most especially Joss. I really admired her character and the strength she uniquely embodies while at the same time being kind and considerate. She really is a wonderful contradiction to read and the same could be said for Brady. His hard exterior and challenging attitude is tempered by his respectful manners and thoughtfulness. When these two came together, it made for an exciting and intense read.

With clear descriptions, fluid pacing, engaging characters, and a love-themed storyline intertwined with emotional conflicts, I couldn’t have asked for more out of this story. The character growth within the story timeline is tremendous, but surprisingly it never felt unrealistic. This second to The Hero series can be read as a standalone, but I would recommend starting with the first since the two leading characters in that story play a role in this one as well. I was disappointed to see the story end, but very happily satisfied with the overall. This one is definitely a keeper and worth re-reading!
