I have been a fan of this series from the get-go and like wine, it's only gotten better with age! In this installment, Chess is in even more trouble than usual. A lot of people have been turning up dead and the Church is trying to found out who or what is committing these atrocious murders. Clearly, Chess ends up right smack in the middle of this case. She's working with the Black Squad, which is an elite group of people in the Church and because of the fact that this is such an important case, Chess is put under a binding spell which, at the risk of great harm or even death, makes her unable to talk about the case to anyone outside of the people who know about the case.
Things get even trickier when her drug-dealer founds out about what's going on and wants information about the case from Chess. And between her drug-dealer pushing her, founding out the motives of some weird newcomer that might or might not be involved in the case and dealing with Terrible, Chess' got her hands full. And that's only the beginning.
City of Ghosts kept me on my toes from beginning to end. Kane's writing just grabs the reader in a tight grip and won't let go until you hit the last page! But why would you want to anyway? This series is too good to pass up! Chess is still the highly messed up druggie that we all know and love and I think in this installment, we really do understand better why she is the way she is. My favorite character is back! Terrible, the drug-dealer's enforcer, is just the best character ever! Love him. Apart from the awesome characters, the plot itself is incredible intricate and kept me wondering until the end. There's so many elements to this story that makes her unbelievably good. City of Ghosts is just full of awesome and I don't think I could love this series any more!
IT’S A THIN LINE BETWEEN ALIVE AND UNDEAD.
Chess Putnam has a lot on her plate. Mangled human corpses have started to show up on the streets of Downside, and Chess’s bosses at the Church of Real Truth have ordered her to team up with the ultra-powerful Black Squad agency to crack the grisly case.
Chess is under a binding spell that threatens death if she talks about the investigation, but the city’s most notorious crime boss—and Chess’s drug dealer—gets wind of her new assignment and insists on being kept informed. If that isn’t bad enough, a sinister street vendor appears to have information Chess needs. Only he’s not telling what he knows, or what it all has to do with the vast underground City of Eternity.
Now Chess will have to navigate killer wraiths, First Elders, and a lot of seriously nasty magic—all while coping with some not-so-small issues of her own. And the only man Chess can trust to help her through it all has every reason to want her dead.
