Shift Happens is the first book in I Heart Shifters series by Christy Gissendaner.
Ellie Reynolds runs a successful nail salon that has a large cliental of shifters. When Jackson Lawrence comes in to try to buy her out her shop, Ellie’s shop gets shot up. This leaves Ellie and Jackson fighting for their lives and getting to know each other. As they get to know each other, their feelings for each other appear.
The beginning of the story makes you wonder how this story will turn out. By the end of the first chapter, I was excited to finish the book. The world the author tried to create appeared a bit hazy. I had a hard time with the location where the beginning of the story took place. Also this world has shifter and nothing beyond that they exist was explained. The story was fast paced from the first chapter to the last. The main characters and the secondary characters were fascinating. I liked that both Ellie and Jackson were not perfect and each had faults that make them realistic.
The point of view stayed with Ellie through the whole book. I would have liked to see things from Jackson’s point of view. The main conflict of the story is the relationship between Ellie and Jackson while fighting for their lives against people who are after Jackson. The conflict keeps the story moving along. The biggest issue I have is how the book ends, its every anticlimactic. The level of conflict in the story was perfect, any more and it would have distracted from the overall story line. The dialogue between the characters comes across as honest and distinct. I liked that the characters voice matched not only the setting they were in but seemed to fit their overall personality. I liked that while I figured there would be a happily ever after ending, this book kept me wondering how it would work out. I hope we get to see these characters again in the future.
Ellie Reynolds runs a nail salon that caters to shifters of all varieties. The proverbial shift hits the fan when billionaire mogul Jackson Lawrence walks in the door and offers Ellie two million dollars to sell her shop. Ellie has no intention of selling out, especially to someone who plans to bulldoze her shop to the ground and replace it with a fast food joint. Their battle of wit and will is brought to a sudden halt when Jackson’s enemies appear, throwing them into a fight for their lives.
Jackson believed he’d left violence behind when he resigned his position with the Blood Wolves, a secret shifter military group, but someone wants his company’s cyber invention and will stop at nothing to get it. He didn’t mean to drag Ellie into his mess, but he’s willing to do anything to protect her and the firewall his friend created...anything except fight his attraction to the outspoken redhead he’s suddenly responsible for. Jackson soon learns Ellie is hotter than he first gave her credit for...like dragon hot...and life is about to get a whole lot more interesting.
Sometimes shift happens when you least expect it.
