Eleanor Silver is a detective with the local police department who seems to push the edges of what is acceptable. She drinks too much and has risky sex all too often. She is being worn down and does not know how to cope with the pressures of her job. However, when a series case leads her to know more about the BDSM lifestyle and meets Dr. Anderson Wells. With Anderson’s help she learns about a lifestyle she never considered and pushes herself to be a better person.
The beginning of the story leaves you interested in how this book will turn out. At the end of the first chapter, I could not wait to finish the book. The author did a good job of bringing the reader in to the world she created. She did a great job of making it very realistic. The pace of the story was a bit slow at some points and fast is others. The main characters and the secondary characters were interesting and true to life. I liked how Eleanor had many faults but was trying to redeem herself, while Anderson seemed relatively perfect. It was a nice dynamic and made the relationship between them more realistic.
The point of view stayed manly with Eleanor all the way through. We did get glimpses of the killer’s point of view as well as Brutus’s point of view. I would have liked to see Anderson’s point of view at times. The main conflict of the book is Eleanor finding herself and making herself a better person. I liked how for Anderson she was willing to be a better person and understood that being a Dominate was not about putting her partner down. I also liked how the murder mystery enhanced the story rather than detract from the story. All the characters fit into the storyline. The level of conflict was perfect anymore and it would have detracted from the overall story. The dialogue between the characters was candid and unique. The characters voice matched not only the setting but fit their overall personality. I loved that this book was filled with twists and turns that kept the reader hooked all the way through. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series.
