Ossian Mckinlock is the person you go to when you have a problem. He is the quintessential big brother who has all the answers. Ossian considers himself a confirmed bachelor that is until he meets Jax Bequette. Jax is not comfortable inside himself. He has never had time to explore his sexuality but upon meeting Ossian he wants to see what he has been missing.
The beginning of the story leaves you interested in knowing more. By the end of the first chapter, I excited to finish the story. The author did a wonderful job of bringing the reader in to the world she created. She did a great job of making the world very realistic. The pace of the story was fast paced from the first page to the last. The main characters and the secondary characters were stimulating and realistic. I really liked that both Ossian and Jax each had faults and were not perfect, making them both very realistic characters.
The point of view alternated between Ossian and Jax, giving the reader a glimpse inside both characters. The changing point of view was done with care so the reader did not get lost or repeat story lines. The main conflict of the story is the budding relationship between Ossian and Jax. The conflict keeps the story moving forward in a realistic and believable way. The level of conflict is perfect anymore and it would have detracted from the overall story line. The dialogue between the characters was very natural and multi-dimensional. The characters voice seemed to match not only the setting but fit their overall personality. The ending was a bit predictable but the author takes the reader on a wonderful journey. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series.
Roses, Rallies, & BBQ is the fifth book in the Clan McKinlock series by Kaitlin Maitland. While this book is part of a series, it can be read and enjoyed as a standalone novel with ease.
Ossian McKinloch is the quintessential big brother who has all the answers, all the time. He considers himself the confirmed bachelor of Clan McKinloch until Jax Bequette stumbles into Oz’s pub and shakes things up. Now Oz is having trouble keeping things casual. Who can resist a guy like Jax who is the perfect mix of fun, masculine, and sexy as hell?
Jax Bequette has never been comfortable in his own skin. Raising his younger sister after their parents’ death gave Jax no time to explore his sexuality. When his friendship with Ossian McKinloch slides into something more, Jax is ready to explore what he’s been missing. The chemistry is combustible, but Jax is almost afraid to believe that he could ever be enough to tame a free spirit like Ossian.
