Double Down is the first book in the Playing the Odds series by Desiree Holt.
Lee Sullivan is the mayor’s publicity chief and in private, a well-respected Domme named Mistress Star. She is content with her life until she meets Branch Colby. Branch is a millionaire and a man who gets what he wants. He makes a bet with a friend that he can get Mistress Star to submit to him. The problem is his heart gets in the way of his bet.
The beginning of the story leaves you wondering how this book will turn out. At the end of the first chapter, I was excited to see how this book would end. The author did a good job of making the world she created realistic. I was able to picture the world she created with ease. The pace of the story was a bit slow at some points and fast is others. The main characters and the secondary characters were thought-provoking and believable. I liked that both Lee and Branch were realistic including that each had faults that they each had to deal with.
The point of view alternated between Lee and Branch, giving the reader a glimpse inside both characters. The changing point of view was done with care so the reader did not get lost or repeat story lines. The main conflict of the story is Branch trying to get to know Lee aka Mistress Star to win his bet with his friend Max. The characters fit the story line well. The level of conflict was a bit low and I wish the storyline was a bit more complicated than it was. The dialogue between the characters was honest and distinct. The characters voice seemed to match not only the setting but fit their overall personality. The ending was a bit predictable but the author takes the reader on a wonderful journey. I hope we get to see these characters again in the future.
Lee Sullivan has really got her life together as the mayor’s publicity chief and the respected Domme, Mistress Star. She doesn’t foresee any bumps in her life until she meets Branch Colby, self-made millionaire and a man who pushes her buttons. She has no idea that he is a full-out Dom who sees women as a challenge and this one more than most.
When Branch’s friend Max bets him he cannot get Lee to submit to him, Branch agrees to a high-stakes wager. The problem is he never expected to fall for her or what the consequences would be when she learned the details of the bet. He has to find a way to repair the situation and she has to decide whether giving her heart is worth the risk.
