Ty and the other members of the Maine Force Recon team Sidewinder are back from their deployment and try to pick up their lives. Each member of the team deal with the effects of war, including nightmares, shakes, and PTSD. However Ty’s brother Deuce asks him to go to Scotland to be part of his wedding and to bring a friend. While in Scotland, on an Island cut off from everyone a murder is hunting and Ty, Zane, Nick and Kelly try to solve the case.
The beginning of the story leaves you wanting to know more. By the end of the first chapter, I could not wait to finish the book. The author did a good job of drawing the reader in to her world. The world she created was very realistic. The pace of the story was fast paced right from the start. The main characters and the secondary characters were interesting and true to life. Both Ty and Zane had faults that they each had to battle making them realistic. The point of view alternated between Ty and Zane, giving the reader a glimpse inside both characters. The changing point of view was done with care so the reader did not get lost or repeat story lines.
The conflict of the story builds from the first page keeping the reader wanting to know more. The characters fit their respective roles perfectly. The level of conflict was perfect. The dialogue between the characters was genuine and distinctive. The characters voice matched not only the setting but fit their overall personality. The ending was not really predictable and keeps the reader on their toes all the way through the book. I hope we get to see these characters again in the future.
Ball and Chain is the eighth book in the Cut and Run series by Abigail Roux. While this book is part of a series, it can be read and enjoyed as a standalone novel. However, I think this book is best enjoyed as part of the series.
Home from their unexpected deployment, the former members of Marine Force Recon team Sidewinder rejoin their loved ones and try to pick up the pieces of the lives they were forced to leave behind. Ty Grady comes home to Zane Garrett, only to find that everything around him has changed—even the men he went to war with. He barely has time to adjust before his brother, Deuce, asks Ty to be his best man. But that isn’t all Deuce asks Ty to do, and Ty must call for backup to deal with the business issues of Deuce’s future father-in-law.
Nick O’Flaherty and Kelly Abbott join Ty and Zane at the wedding on an island in Scotland, thinking they’re there to assuage Deuce’s paranoia. But when bodies start dropping and boats start sinking, the four men get more involved with the festivities than they’d ever planned to.
With the clock ticking and the killer just as stuck on the isolated island as they are, Ty and Zane must navigate a veritable minefield of family, friends, and foes to stop the whole island from being destroyed.
