"Pale Demon" book 9 in "The Hollows" series by Kim Harrison is a masterpiece in story-telling. The novel brings together all the excitement and intrigue that series fans have come to expect. It will leaves you spellbound wishing for more.
This installment begins a few months after the evens of "Black Magic Sanction" as Rachel prepares to attend her hearing to have her shunning removed by the witches council. While I do not want to give away the juicy parts; just let me say that the getting to the hearing in San Francisco is a deadly game and hilarious adventure for Rachel and her band of merry men.
Although Rachel still finds herself the underdog again, this time all bets are off and she taking prisoners. I just love this new and improved Rachel. Unlike in the past, in this installment Rachel really steps up her game and becomes a force to be reckoned with. Gone are her doubts of who or what she is. I loved that she finally accpets her differences and even embraces them.
Most of the series favorites make an appearance in this installment adding continuity to the series. The novel does an excellent job of showing the evolution of its main cast of characters, yet still is able to protray the personality traits that readers have enjoyed thus far. From Trent’s secretive nature, Jenks jovial personality to Ivy’s over protectiveness, all the best qualities are still visible.
Ms. Harrison does an outstanding job of broadening a reader's perspective of the landscape of the ever-after; the behaviors of the inhabitants, the origins of demonic creation and the importance of Rachel's existence.
For another thrilling adventure of Rachel Mariana Morgan, "Pale Demon" will not disappoint. I think of all of the novels in the series, this one is my favorite and I highly recommend it.
Condemned to death for black magic and shunned, Rachel Morgan has three days to somehow get to the annual witches convention in San Francisco and clear her name. If she fails, the only way she can escape death is to live in the demonic ever after . . . for ever after.
Banned from the flight lists, Rachel teams up with elven tycoon Trent Kalamack, headed for the West Coast for her own mysterious business. But Rachel isn't the only passanger along for the ride. Can a witch, an elf, a living vampire, and a pixy in one car survive for over 2,300 miles? And that's not counting the assassin on their tail.
A fearsome demon walks the sunlight, freed after centuries of torment to slay the innocent and devour souls. But his ultimate prey is Rachel Morgan. While the powerful witch with nerves of steel will do whatever it takes to stay alive, even embracing her own demonic nature may not be enough to save her.
