“Night of the Vampires” by Heather Graham is a unique paranormal novel set during the time of the American Civil War, when all is not as it seems. Hidden amongst the ghastly carnage of war is an even bigger threat to all of humanity.
Well, this novel was not quite what I expected; never judge a book by its cover or its title. While I admit I did jump at the cover and title, I was surprised that the novel was set in the American Civil War time period. I found myself amazingly intrigued in the concept of a battle against vampirism during the American Civil War. At first I found the story-line to be too shrouded in historical details and less about the hero and heroine, Megan Fox and Cole Granger. My first impression changed dramatically as the novel really started to shine around the middle of the novel and found its rhythm by the conclusion.
While the novel does include some romantic aspects, romance is not the driving force of the story-line; it is the coming together of foes to combat a greater evil that is the heart of the novel.
Ms. Graham does an excellent job of depicting the brutality, mistrust, conflict and the compassion of the time period. I loved how her writing style easily weaves the concept of vampirism into the details and facts of the aftermath of the battles.
If you love historical based novels with a bit of paranormal, you will love “Night of the Vampires”. I recommend it.
As a soldier, Cole Granger fights to restore peace to a world divided by war and evil. His extraordinary talents are enlisted to prevent the president's horrific premonition from becoming reality. Nothing—and no one—will stop him from fulfilling his duty. Especially the mysterious young woman who claims to be his comrade's sister. Enemy or ally, he can't yet determine. But one thing he knows for certain is that he must keep her close. Very close.
Megan Fox's quest to uncover a family secret leads her to the center of vampire riots in West Virginia. To find the answers she needs—and clear herself of suspicion—she must join forces with Cole. They work undercover to bring justice, but they can't disguise the potent attraction and need that draw them together. Yet trust doesn't come easily for Cole…and when Megan unearths the grim, dark truth, can she trust him to believe her?
