Guardian of her three younger siblings, twenty-six-year old, Vanessa Grant leads a responsible life full of hard work and parenting. Though confident and independent, she is shy with men and doesn't date because she doesn't have the time. And at six-foot tall she doesn't believe men find her attractive.
When one of her friends gets married, Vanessa spends time with Ralph Prescott, an ex-NBA player turned businessman. He's also a self-professed bachelor who loves women too much to be tied to just one. Though Vanessa doesn't approve of his womanizing ways, she is charmed by his looks and kindness and finds herself fantasizing about him.
Wanting to experience a man at least once, Vanessa proposes a single night of passion, no strings. He agrees and they spend one special evening together.
Ralph wants more, but while Vanessa cherishes the time they spent together, she isn't about to begin a relationship with a man with his reputation. She tries to move on, but Ralph will have none of it. He pursues her and, shocking even himself, tries to win her over.
Vanessa values their friendship but chalks Ralph’s interest up to a battered ego. Then her life is turned upside-down when the father of her two-youngest siblings' (they are twins) emerges and wants custody. But Vanessa knows the man who'd abandoned his children and holds him responsible for her own mother’s untimely death. She doesn't believe him capable of loving the twins.
When Ralph steps in to help, Vanessa refuses. Seeing no other way to assist Vanessa in her bid to keep her family together, Ralph proposes marriage. Still she says no. At her wits end and frustrated, Vanessa eventually swallows her pride and agrees to take a loan from him.
Through the tumultuous struggle, Ralph learns what it is to love and Vanessa learns what it is to trust.
Can't Say No is a very well-written love story. The character development is phenomenal and the love scenes touching. I enjoyed the fact that there were many characters in the book whom stayed in character. Plus I feel like I could spot the hero and heroine if they were walking down the street!
The dialog was terrific and the plot cohesive.
Nicely done Ms. Ford, you have a new fan.
Funny, sexy, and hot, ex-NBA star Ralph Prescott is Vanessa Grant's dream lover. He's also a notorious, no-good player—the wrong kind of man for a woman with big responsibilities. But at a mutual friend's lavish wedding, passion and curiosity get the best of maid of honor Vanessa, and Ralph reveals himself to be the best man in more ways than one.
Ralph has had more than his share of women, but none has captivated him like Vanessa. To convince her that his player days are behind him, he'll have to show her what kind of man he truly is. He'll have to fight every inch of the way to break through her defenses and claim the blazing ecstasy they both want . . . and show her why she can't—and shouldn't—say no.
