Jack Reacher, rover, ex-military genius extraordinaire, hitches a ride on a tour bus full of senior citizens that is driving through a snow storm in South Dakota.
When the bus he's on has an accident, he's stranded in the town of Bolton. Turns out Bolton has a new federal penitentiary and is home to Janet Salter, a key witness in a major drug crime who is Numero Uno on the bad guys list to eliminate. Refusing to leave her home, she has round the clock police protection--except when the prison sirens wail. Then, by contract, all police must abandon their posts and surround the city.
At that time the cute little old lady will be left to her own protective devices. The problem is, the bad guys have the ability to make the prison's sirens go off.
Jack proves his analytic and combat skills early on and is tapped by the Bolton Police Department to help them unravel what is going on. One; they have an abandoned government building that is surrounded by bikers. Two; they have a major drug resale problem. And three; how are they going to keep Janet Salter safe?
Add to the mix a ruthless Mexican drug lord who is calling the shots.
Okay, I'll admit it, I have a crush on Jack Reacher. He's interesting, intelligent, deadly, and deals out his own version of justice.
This is my first Jack Reacher novels and I thoroughly loved it. Lee Child is a riveting storyteller delving out just enough of the puzzle to keep the pages turning. I ate through this book in record time, even after I figured out who the bad guy was.
My only complaint was the ending and that I knew who the bad guy was long before Reacher figured it out. Even so, what a fantastic writer. I can't wait to get my hands on another Reacher novel.
