The thing I love most about Monica McCarty books is the way she takes figures from history and imagines their lives outside of the few events we are able to read about in history books. She stays very close to the historical facts that we know, but all of those questions about the real man behind the legend, who he married, how he loved, and what drove him are the pieces that she expands on and lends light to in her books. McCarty never fails to educate and entertain at the same time and often when I’m reading one of her books I think that what she has imagined is exactly how it could have happened. She is a permanent entry on my auto-buy list and I can’t wait for the next book in her Highland Guard Novel.
Robert “Raider” Boyd never thought he’d see the English lass that saved his life helping to free him from an English prison years ago but fate has brought Lady Rosalin Clifford into his life again. Robert finds himself faced with temptation day in and day out and it won’t be long before he can resist. But Robert has another passion, the passion he feels for the Bruce’s cause and he is driven by a deep need for vengeance. Rosalin believes she betrayed her brother when she helped Robert escape from prison, and now she’s faced once again with the man she has always wanted as her own. If she doesn’t find a way to help him temper his need for vengeance she knows that Robert’s hatred of the English will end up destroying them both.
After consolidating his gains against the enemy English, King Robert the Bruce of Scotland sends his best soldiers to fortify the lawless borders. These legendary warriors of the Highland Guard let nothing come before king and country—except the calling of their heart.
Of all Bruce’s elite warriors, Robert “Raider” Boyd is the most formidable. A true patriot whose bare hands are a deadly weapon, Robbie is the fierce enforcer of the Guard, and his hatred of the English has been honed to a razor-sharp edge. But vengeance proves bittersweet when his enemy’s beautiful sister falls into his hands and he finds himself fighting temptation—a battle he badly wants to lose.
Lady Rosalin Clifford barely recognizes the rebel prisoner she saved from execution six years ago. Though her girlish ideals for fairness have matured into a passion for justice, Rosalin believes she betrayed her brother when she helped this dangerous man escape. Now her traitorous act has come back to haunt her. But she can’t deny the longing this tormented warrior ignites in her, or deny the passion that turns sworn enemies into lovers. Is the gentle love of a true English Rose enough to free Scotland’s most brutal warrior from a path of vengeance—before it’s too late?
