Nikki Kimball is a woman who has experienced a lot of hard luck lately. She has an ex-husband that was a cheater and a selfish brother who stole everything from her and takes everything she owns. Nikki is struggling to make ends meet as a horse rescuer when her truck breaks down on the way home from rescuing a horse. Dillon Barnett and his best friend and foster-brother Brett Anderson have always had a hankering for Nikki. Although, back in high school both came to bitter blows over Nikki, she was never aware that they cared so deeply for her. Now, she has the opportunity of a lifetime, a chance to find love in the midst of hardship. However, it soon becomes apparent that not only does she have deep feelings for one neighbor but both also his foster-brother. Now Nikki has even tougher decisions to make, how can she choose between two men? Should she? And if she doesn’t, what is next?
Leah Braemel writes a beautiful, intriguing and realistic story that draws the reader in from the first paragraph. Her characters are realistic and must face many hurdles before figuring out where the relationship or relationships will go. In addition, Leah has created a multitude of side characters that add depth and realism to the story. The story is well paced and very enjoyable. Though Nikki is the main focus of the story both Dillon and Brett are well-developed and the reader gets a peek at what each is truly feeling and what scars they each have that they will need to overcome in their pursuit of Nikki. I thoroughly enjoyed the story, and found it unique to the genre. Readers will enjoy this western with a twist.
