The Pied Piper of Hamelin

Silver Penny Stories

This classic story shows that it’s important to be honest. Children and adults will enjoy this story. Even though I’ve read this story many times through the years, I never tire of reading the classics and that includes this story as well.

When the stranger arrived in Hamelin and introduced himself as a rat catcher, the townspeople were excited. The Pied Piper offered to get rid of all the rats in the town for a fee. The mayor agreed. When the Pied Piper led all of the rats out of the town, the mayor saw that their problem was solved, so he refused to pay the Pied Piper. One day, the Pied Piper returned while all of the adults were away and led all of the children out of the town. When the adults found out what happened, they were very upset with the mayor and wanted their children back. The Pied Piper agreed to bring the children back only if the mayor paid him. After receiving his payment for getting rid of the mice, the Pied Piper returned all of the children back to the town.

The mayor thought he could be dishonest and not honor his agreement with the Pied Piper. I don’t think he thought that the Pied Piper would take away all of the children. This was surprising to me because I assumed he’d just return all the rats. Luckily, the mayor saw what a huge mistake he had made and decided it was in his best interest to pay the Piper.

The illustrations are so colorful and vivid. You can see the sorrow in the parents’ faces when they realize their children are missing. You can also see the happiness when the children are returned.
