The bonds formed among friends during childhood are some of the strongest that exist. Promises are made and oaths taken that seem easy to keep. Nicky Fusco believed the oaths he had taken and the friendships he had formed would last forever but life had other plans. Decades later, Nicky Fusco becomes a suspect in a series of brutal murders, investigated by none other than his childhood friend, Frankie Donovan. Donovan is a product of the streets but grew up to be a cop, while some of his closest friends took very different paths. As Donovan comes to realize that Fusco is the most likely killer, he is torn with the decision he will have to make: to pursue Fusco as his oath as a Detective requires or to let him go, as his decades old oath requires?
Murder Takes Time by Giacomo Giammatteo is book 1 in his Friendship and Honor series, featuring Detective Frankie Donovan. Donovan is a product of the streets but grew up to be a cop, while some of his closest friends took very different paths. Giammatteo has a created a character who is torn between loyalties to the people he serves as a Detective and those he swore loyalty to in his youth. While I enjoyed the book overall, the constant switching back and forth between timelines was a little distracting; I found myself constantly trying to reconcile events. Even so, this book shows that the series has potential and I look forward to reading future entries in it. This book is a 3-star read and one I would recommend.

MURDER TAKES TIME grips you by the throat.
Nicky Fusco thought he knew right from wrong, living by an oath of friendship & honor with his three best friends. But life took them down separate paths, and the oath was broken. Secrets were kept. Years later they are reunited and the bonds of their friendship are brutally tested, putting them on a collision course set in motion long ago.
Murder Takes Time is not a typical murder mystery or mob story. It is a thriller, a romance, and a coming-of-age story that rips your heart out. By the time you're done reading it, you just might find yourself rethinking the definition of friendship & honor--even right and wrong.
Three boys, one girl. Friendship, honor, love--betrayal. It ends with murder. (100,000+)
