Aislinn Finvarra is a member of the Seelie Court and resides in the Rose Tower. She’s fairly happy there though her boyfriend publicly dropped her and her best friend was thrown out of the Rose Tower and is now living at the Black. Still, Aislinn attends all the social events and has her life pretty much in order. She does have some secrets that she doesn’t want known, but who doesn’t!
Gabriel Mac Braire has come to the Rose Tower from the Black to ask for residence. Of course, first he has to get the Summer Queen’s permission and he wants to check the place out. This is a very unusual move for someone who is so high in the Unseelie court and the residents of the Rose Tower aren’t at all sure that they want Gabriel in their mist. Still, he’s a very handsome man and the Summer Queen is sure to invite him for a visit. What she doesn’t know is Gabriel has a hidden agenda that he won’t be sharing.
Some how Gabriel is able to get Aislinn as his guide for his week visit. Aislinn keeps telling herself that she’s attracted to him due to his magic but even questions that herself. Gabriel finds that he’s got feelings for Aislinn, something he’s never had in all his long life. Their secrets and hidden agendas are now at war with wants and desires. Can they work it out before there really is a war between the Summer Queen and the Winter King?
Immerse yourself in the magical world centered around Piefferburg Square. The fae may be contained but they have a rich society and intrigue can be the name of the game. Aislinn’s family history isn’t want she thinks and staying alive will cause a major change in one of the Courts. Gabriel knows his duty but his loyalties become divided until he has to make a choice, a choice that will change his life forever.
This is the second book in the Dark Magic series and it’s as good as the first. You don’t need to read the first to thoroughly enjoy this book but this world is so excellent you’re going to want to.
The characters are varied and awesome. There are many types of fae and Ms Bast uses a lot of them in this world. This gives her characters some very unique gifts and attributes. Fae are very long-lived creatures and through the centuries they have interbreed among the different races, Seelie with Unseelie, wild with either and there is even some human in the mix. Magical abilities are as varied as the different characters with some barely able to use it and others extremely powerful. With all these variations, this world is rich and deep.
The fae have been imprisoned for a couple of centuries. They would love to break out but don’t have the ability to do so. There is a way though. The Books of Bindings and three artifacts will give them this ability. In the first book, one of the artifacts comes to the Summer Queen. In this one, we learn that the Book of Bindings is located within Piefferburg. We’re not the only ones to learn this though. The Phaendir, the ones who keep the magic containing the fae working, have also discovered this fact. How far one of them is willing to go to get it is astonishing even to them. If the Phaendir get their hands on the book, the fae will have no hope of getting their freedom.
There is not way that I can truly give justice to this complex world. Besides all the above there are lots of subplots going on as well as the love story that has to happen. There are twists in the plot that aren’t expected and a growth in the characters along with the world.
I love Anya Bast’s books. Her imagination is incredible and her ability to share the worlds she develops is out of this world. Wicked Enchantment is not a light piece of fluff, though the Summer Queen’s court seems to be. Instead, Wicked Enchantment searches out deep dark secrets and pushes characters into roles that stretches their abilities and desires. This book was excellent.
Better yet, when this wonderful story ends, we’re treated to a glossary of terms as well as the knowledge that another book is coming with a preview of Cruel Enchantment. I can’t wait!
When you’re a half incubus, your reputation precedes you…
All eyes are on Gabriel Mac Braire the day he makes his first appearance in the Seelie Court, including those of Aislinn Finvarra. Despite deep bitterness over her last failed relationship, Aislinn cannot help but be curious about the half incubus who is known to possess dark magick, both lethal and sexual in nature. Rumors abound of the women who have become enslaved to his irresistible charms.
So when the Summer Queen of the fae orders Aislinn herself to act as his guide in the court, she is understandably on guard. She’s fallen under the spell of far less persuasive men before. In addition, Gabriel might be more than he seems and his true mission is far from innocent.
This time, Aislinn must protect not only her heart, but her very life…
