Up in Smoke is Katie MacAlister’s second novel of the Silver Dragons. It picks up where the first one left off which is with May in Abaddon with the Demon Lord Magoth wanting to make her his consort.
May is a doppelganger or in other words, she was made not born. Her twin, Cyrene is a Naiad or a water being. At one point she convinced Lord Magoth to create a doppelganger using her common sense. This created May but has her bound to him. Over the years, May has been forced to steal things for him but she has avoided his bed. On one of her last missions to the mortal world, May meet Gabriel, the leader of the silver dragons and became his mate. May wants nothing more than to be with Gabriel but has no choice but to become Magoth’s consort.
Gabriel is the leader or wyvern of the silver dragons. Silver dragons emerged from the black dragons and currently there is a struggle going on with the supposed leader of the black dragons wanting recognition and wanting the silver dragons returned to the black dragon’s control. Gabriel wants his mate and will do anything to get her back.
Because May can travel to the mortal world once she becomes consort to Magoth, he know has access to it also. This is what he wants and immediately brings them to it. May having done what he wanted her to do is left behind as Magoth goes off to cause trouble. May reunites with Gabriel.
While that sounds like a happy ending, it’s actually just the beginning of May and Gabriel’s adventures in this book. Due to a misunderstanding May becomes the vessel that carries a shard of the dragon heart. This shard is making her a dragon and May is resisting all the way, though Gabriel doesn’t seem to mind that she is becoming more dragon than human. There are 5 shards that make up the dragon’s heart and the belief is if May can get all 5 together she can transfer the shard in her to another vessel. Because dragons don’t usually do anything for nothing, May and Gabriel spend much of the book making deals.
Also, not to be forgotten are the blue and red dragon septs. The blue dragons are having a leadership dispute, which is brought to gathering of all wyvern. There the true leader of the blue sept will be decided and several dragons will be thrown out of the sept! The red dragon’s wyvern was banished to Abaddon. Another has taken control of the sept but will they be able to keep it?
Aisling and Drake, green dragon wyvern and his mate, are prominent in this book. Aisling is about 6 weeks before giving birth. Drake is still way over protective. It’s nice to catch up with them and see them taking an active role in May and Gabriel’s story.
This is an excellent book. I really don’t think Ms MacAlister can write anything except excellent books!
The characters continue to grow and gain depth. In this book, Gabriel’s mother gives her insights on Gabriel’s lack of control with May. This stuns May that a grown man would talk to his mother about sex but gives the reader a better understanding of Gabriel’s relationship with her.
The storyline develops and continues the story of May and Gabriel’s relationship. May is bound to Magoth and that makes for an interesting third in their relationship. Also, May is insecure about Gabriel loving her or the creature she is becoming with the shard. There is no ending in this story yet and this book ends with a lead up to the next one.
This biggest flaw that I have with this book is its ability to stand-alone. While someone could probably read this book and enjoy it without reading the previous book, they wouldn’t be able to understand all the subtle events that happen in it. References are through out the book about previous things that happened and why like the red wyvern getting sent to Abaddon and the war between the red and green dragons.
Though May Northcott's heart belongs to Gabriel Tauhou, leader of the silver dragons, being stuck in Abaddon has significantly cooled down her love life--especially since a demon lord is trying to woo her. So far, May has resisted his efforts, but it's getting increasingly harder to thwart disaster.
So May is shocked when Gabriel encourages her to give in to the demon prince. But her fire-breathing boyfriend has an ulterior motive. Since May was created in the mortal world, her surrender would give her master access to that world, where he would lose most of his powers.
It looks as though May will have to barter to gain her freedom and fulfill her destiny by Gabriel's side. But will a deal with the devil make life heaven or hell?
