The Water Witch

Fairwick Chronicles, #2

Brilliant! Though this is the second book in this series, don’t let that fact stop you from picking this book up. It will quickly get you involved with magical and non-magical characters, take you on a trip to a magical land and get you interested in small town relationships. This story has so many layers from retrieving a spirit to bring a Norse semi-god back to life to hidden talents to power struggles that will pit family members against each other. Every page adds more to this story’s life and brings it alive. I think there is something for every type of reader in this story and though obviously a fantasy, it could also be a mystery, a romance and I’m sure one or two other genres. Yet for such a complex story, it is extremely easy to follow.

Callie McFay is getting ready to enjoy her summer break from being a professor at the local college. She plans on doing several enjoyable things but finds herself tromping through the marshes surrounding the town to help some juvenile undines. Callie is a gatekeeper and the undines need the underwater gate into Fairie opened. And, so starts her adventures during her summer vacation. Her incubus boyfriend, Liam, keeps coming to her in her dreams. Her grandmother is trying to permanently close the only gate between Fairie and the mortal world. So much is going on and Callie’s magic is erratic and unstable so she ends up with a mentor to help her. But is he helping or hoping to become more than just a mentor?

I can’t wait to read the last book in the awesome trilogy. And, then I hope there are spinoffs because there are some great characters within this series.

Book Blurb for The Water Witch

Perfect for fans of Deborah Harkness and Elizabeth Kostova, The Water Watch is a breathtakingly sexy and atmospheric new novel of ancient folklore, passionate love, and thrilling magic.

After casting out a dark spirit, Callie McFay, a professor of gothic literature, has at last restored a semblance of calm to her rambling Victorian house. But in the nearby thicket of the honeysuckle forest, and in the currents of the rushing Undine stream, more trouble is stirring. . . .

The enchanted town of Fairwick’s dazzling mix of mythical creatures has come under siege from the Grove: a sinister group of witches determined to banish the fey back to their ancestral land. With factions turning on one another, all are cruelly forced to take sides. Callie’s grandmother, a prominent Grove member, demands her granddaughter’s compliance, but half-witch/half-fey Callie can hardly betray her friends and colleagues at the college. To stave off disaster, Callie enlists Duncan Laird, an alluring seductive academic who cultivates her vast magical potential, but to what end? Deeply conflicted, Callie struggles to save her beloved Fairwick, dangerously pushing her extraordinary powers to the limit—risking all, even the needs of her own passionate heart.
