An extremely complex world is developed in this first book of what appears to be an interesting and imaginative series. Ancient Norse gods are still interfering in the human realm and have their followers living throughout the world. However, the group that is considered below the rest is the Crows which is where Kera finds herself. Totally focused and very much still a Marine, Kera has to deal with chaos and rules she doesn’t understand. A romantic interest comes from another group. Violence, power struggles, death go along with touches of humor and romance. While it took a bit to get into this story, once I did I had no desire to put it down. I began to love the multiple layers of this story and all the dimensions and issues that come out. And, while I’m not really clear on all of the Norse gods, I didn’t need to. I’m definitely looking forward to more books in this series and to see where Kera and Vig end up.
Kera made it through two tours in the Middle East so she never expected to die while breaking up a fight between a guy and his teenage girlfriend, but she did. However, that is not the end of her story as she is given a second chance at life with the Crows, a group of women who are hired killers for an ancient Norse god. It sounds like a good fit except there is no order or discipline. Kera doesn’t make any friends trying to make that happen either. What has she gotten herself into?
Kera Watson never expected to face death behind a Los Angeles coffee shop. Not after surviving two tours lugging an M16 around the Middle East. If it wasn't for her hot Viking customer showing up too late to help, nobody would even see her die.
In uncountable years of service to the Allfather Odin, Ludvig "Vig" Rundstrom has never seen anyone kick ass with quite as much style as Kera. He knows one way to save her life--but she might not like it. Signing up with the Crows will get Kera a new set of battle buddies: cackling, gossiping, squabbling, party-hearty women. With wings. So not the Marines.
But Vig can't give up on someone as special as Kera. With a storm of oh-crap magic speeding straight for L.A., survival will depend on combining their strengths: Kera's discipline, Vig's loyalty... and the Crows' sheer love of battle. Boy, are they in trouble.
