Tara is currently living with her two sisters in an old inn they inherited from their mother. They each share the same mother but each has a different father. Tara and her older sister, Maddie were raised by their fathers while the youngest sister, Chloe lived with their mother. Tara and Maddie spent some time with their mother which is how Tara met Ford.
They were seventeen when they met. It was summer and Ford was pretty much living on his sailboat. His grandmother was raising him and his sisters. There wasn't much money and Ford was doing all he could to help out. Tara had fought with her mother and was looking for a place to go to. The two teens reached out to each other and became best friends. Later, they became lovers which lead to an unplanned pregnancy. Tara, being reasonable and responsible, gave that baby girl up for adoption and never returned to Lucky Harbor, Washington until now.
Ford knew Tara made the right decision concerning their daughter. But he's never forgotten her and is now ready for her. He's finally making money and he's a champion sailboat racer. Just when he thinks he's made progress in getting Tara back into his life and his bed, an unexpected visitor turns up at the inn, Tara's ex!
Tara's ex isn't just anyone, he's Logan Perrish, a professional race car driver. Logan is on a mission. Two years after Tara and his divorce, he's decided that he misses her and wants her back. He's even willing to spend the summer in Lucky Harbor to convince Tara. It doesn't hurt that he can't race right now do to injuries.
Tara doesn't want any of this. She just wants to live her own life and get the inn up and running. Can one of these men change her mind? And what Tara doesn't know is her sisters have plans for her too! To complicate Tara's life even more, it seems the daughter she gave up for adoption has turned up for the job she's hiring for.
This is the second novel about these three sisters. You do not need to read the first one to thoroughly enjoy this one. (The first one is Simply Irresistible and it's Maddie's story)
The characters in this story are unique. Each sister has her own personality which causes some friction. They've had to plan a no fight day so they can stop long enough to know each other. Though they do irritate each other, they are also learning to love each other. Tara is bossy and likes things her way but Ford loves her like that. Ford appears to be easy going and not willing to fight for what he wants. Could that actually be a show? Logan is all for competition and he sees Ford as competition for Tara. How far will he go to win her back?
The town of Lucky Harbor comes alive. The people in it are fun and diverse. There are nosey old women and a sexy hot cop, there are kids working and those trying to get the most out of life knowing that they won't be able to do things soon. From Ford and his friend's bar to the carnival on the waterfront, this town is laid out so you think you could easily find it and be able to get around. None of these details distract from the story but they enhance it.
The Sweetest Thing revolves around Tara, her loves and her daughter. Each could be its own book but together they make for a complex story filled with love and hope. Nothing is easy and mistakes are made.
Alright, from the beginning of the story you are fairly sure that Tara is going to end up with Ford and some how their daughter is going to be a part of the story, even if it is passing. Logan makes for an interesting distraction and his addition to the story actually makes Ford's character more defined. The biggest problem is getting Tara to relax and unwind enough to enjoy having a guy interested in her.
I really enjoyed this story. It was light hearted and fun. It was why readers love romance. There is more to romance than sex! Life is more complicated than just two people meeting also and this story takes those complications and makes them work. Your past, your family and your future doesn't go away because you meet someone or, in Ford and Tara's case, reconnect with someone. This story takes it all and has you cheering Ford along as he tries to do what is right while Tara tries to figure out where he stands.
